1. Can you read that diagram and give me a handy response? Please? I'll give you thanks...

I was impressed at the noise potential that noticeably tiny box had, not how it was blending. It's hard not to be impressed by the PSB - Imagine Bs...have you heard them? My 5-word recollection of the sub wasn't supposed to be pithy. It was loud and full, and definitely filled the depth to a level the B's can't reach, making me want a sub...Night and day? I didn't say that. I could listen to the Imagine B's without...but screw that, I wanna womp sometimes.

1. I'm unable to find that spec for the 10. What can you help me read out of this for the 8?

The eight appears to have a very early inductance rolloff up high - imo a woofer should be flat to 200hz so that it can blend properly.

But besides that, you can definitely see compression in the top two SPL sweeps. In the yellow graph, it's about 12db down at 23hz anyways (which is pretty sub-par... it should only be around 6 db down at this frequency if at all)

In the top two graphs, even though there is more output, the bottom end is limited - the sub simply can't produce more output down low. The bottom end is being "choked" by the limits of the driver, the box, or the amplifier equalization. One or the other, it's limited.

It might be a bit better for the 10 over the 8, but it's not likely a sub i personally would want to own. I would be looking at 12 inch drivers minimal for a sealed sub, especially if the plan is to eventually use it in a larger room.

To be honest I think sealed subs shouldn't be smaller than 15 inch, and vented subs shouldn't be smaller that 12 inch, simply because more excursion is a high chance of more distortion. IE Epik Legend, SVS PB12 Plus/ PB13U / SB16, Rythmik FV12 / FV15/ F15, Epik Empire, Funkywaves 12.x, 15.3, 18 sealed, Seaton Submersive, JTR captivator, HSU ULS-15, VTF-3, VTF-15.

But that's just me and my opinion. ;) :D

More excursion only can mean more distortion with a poorly designed woofer.

When one takes a driver like the W7 series from JL Audio or the LMS drivers from TC Sounds they can sound cleaner at/near full tilt than some woofers at low volume due to highly optimized motors, suspensions, etc. Coupled with unbelievably low power compression, they are stellar performers at any output level.

I personally lean towards a 12" woofer or larger myself in many cases but that does not mean there are not great 10" woofers out there that can do a great job. It all depends upon one's budget.

The CSS woofer's like the SDX10 are a great example of high performance 10" woofer at a low price point.

Then again I am looking at this from the point of a custom designed DIY setup with a quality driver taking a minimally compromised approach...

That's the kind of post I was looking for -- thanks!!

I'm 97% decided on the Epik Legend. Looks like a stellar piece for a great price.

I've come a long way...I'll let ya'll know what I end up with and how I feel about it.

I'd say it's pretty true for all woofers, but yes, I do understand the point you're making. The best woofers (the exceptions) do have less distortion at high excursions than lesser woofers at lesser excursions.

But when you consider similar motor quality, then well, I seriously doubt an SDX-10, for example, will have the same distortion at 100db at 35hz as an SDX-15 ;) - point is - bigger is not just about the max output. I don't know if, even at 90db, that a 8W7 would have as low distortion as LMS-5400.

My post earlier was general. Of course I'm well aware of exceptions / no iron rule - but I still lean towards more surface area regardless.

Surface area aside, I also think bigger boxes are better. I don't think boxes should suffocate drivers and then be compensated by EQ / watts

I'm still waiting on some measurements of the Legend or Empire. They look pretty capable for sealed subs.

I think I understand the point you are trying to make here about surface area. It is easier for a larger woofer to achieve a desired output level while also not having to work as hard.

I would also keep in mind that large/small enclosures are really only applicable based upon what the Theile/Small parameters dictate is a a proper alignment.

My goal is always to design for the most linear frequency response while maintaining as low as an f3 as the driver allows without running out of "steam". Sometimes this requires a variance of +10% to +20% on enclosure size to finesse a little flatter response but it depends upon the driver in question.

This is an old post. Please note that the PSB sub he was initially looking at would have been his best option at $200 off. Second choice would have been rythmik for a slightly higher price. Svs was out of his range but dollar for dollar, Rythmik is still a better Sub. The PSB he mentioned in the beginning was a great idea and he was steered away unfortunately. ESPECIALLY considering it is matched to the speakers he had. Duh.....

Old post aside, how do you figure the speakers/sub is "matched" particularly?
