EVM12L surround issue?

I just got a used EVM12L guitar speaker and the surround looks suspect to me.

Issue 1: The clearance between the mounting pad and the surround is extremely tight, they're almost flush. If the speaker was rear mounted, I think there's the risk of the surround hitting the baffle. See pic. What do you think?

Issue 2: The surround doesn't look symmetrical. One side has 3 complete rolls and the other side only has 2 complete rolls, basically 2.5 rolls or so. See pics for detail. Is this normal or is this a flaw?

It has had an improper repair. The wrong glue was used among other things.

However if there is no gap rub, I would leave it alone.

If there is gap rub the speaker will feel gritty and grinding, as you move the cone in and out, and the speaker will buzz when you play it.

There is a very good chance that the voice coil is not centered in the gap, and the speaker will have to be reconed by someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks. This is unfortunate, but it's risk I take from an online emporium. I don't want to deal with reconing. I feel like it's more trouble than it's worth, and probably more expensive than simply pawning it off and getting a brand new one.

There is a special speaker glue made for the purpose and it's clear and not blue.

I emailed the guy who sold it to me. He says he bought them brand new from Full Compass 6 months ago and that they have not been modified. I doubt he's lying since he has no reason to, there's nothing I can do about it anyways. If this is the case, EV must be making some shoddy stuff these days.

Telex own EV now, so who knows what goes on. However have you tried the speaker? I told you to test it for gap rub. If there is no gap rub, and the speaker does not buzz, then go ahead and use it.

Those pictures show poor quality control though.

Does it state the country of manufacture on the speaker?

If the coil is rubbing you will feel it if you push the cone in and out.

A speaker with the voice coil touching the pole piece sounds absolutely awful. So I suspect you have got lucky.

True, but for a guitar speaker, the performance may well be adequate. Not the best situation, I agree.

What is the country of manufacture of that driver?

It says made in the USA. I just got another EVM12L, the black label version, and it has similar surround issues where the clearance is tight and it's asymmetrical. I suppose if the baffle hole is cut right, the surround shouldn't come close to hitting the baffle. I took a detailed look at my Eminence Delta Pro and the surround is also sliiightly asymmetrical. Looks like it's not too uncommon.

Oh, and the glue isn't actually blue, it's clear in real life. It just shows up blue-ish in pictures.
