Weird cable question

I own a pair of M-audio studio pro 3 monitors; they were my first attempt at computer based playback and the speakers are not bad (but not great either). Here's the problem, the interconnect between the speakers has gone bad and needs to be replaced but it is a weird cable. It consists of basic speaker wire with a 1/8 mini-jack plug at either end. I haven't found this for sale anywhere and M-audio is completely unresponsive to my e-mails. Is this just a weird cable or does someone actually sell this? I'm also clueless about DIY cables but I'm willing to give it a go. Any ideas?

I dunno where you can get a replacement either...for others who might be able to help, the cable he is talking about is on the bottom right:

1/8" mini to 1/8" mini plug cables?

Cables with 1/8" mini-plugs on both ends aren't uncommon and the stereo ones marked for MP3 apps (or portable units to auto radio aux in jacks) will work just fine for mono usage and they are commonly available. RatShack and other places probebly offer them in mono but tracking them down might be more hassle than it's worth.

I'm confused (not for the first time, ;) Are you talking about a standard 1/8 mini-jack interconnect? Something like this, http://www.amazon.com/iSimple-ISVE913-3-5mm-Mini-Male/dp/B0015G5URG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1309190862&sr=8-3?

Define "standard".

1/8" mini-plugs come in both stereo and mono. Which is "standard"?

Using the picture on supplied by Phil, the black cable (tip/ring/ring, or stereo) will work for the yellow (tip/ring, or mono) one, but the opposite is not true.

IOW, you can use a stereo cable for mono but you cannot use a mono cable for stereo.

You're welcome.
