how to prevent speaker abuse for a party

my friends throwing a house party and im going to use my setup for the party and i want to take all the precautions i can so i wont abuse my beloved setup i have. If you can reccomend any tips and suggestions that would be great. I have an onkyo 7.1 receiver ( the receiver pumps out modest watts as is originally came in a HTIB setup) thats hooks up to two infinity beta 20s as the fronts. I have the c250 center speaker but i dont think im going to use it. For my sub I have the 12 inch Atlantic Technology 642e whichs pumps out 300 watts (class D amp) I have the crossover at 60hz and i have the fronts set to "small" for the caliberation. and for the Multiplex i have it M/S. any suggestions and tips on caliberation would be appreciated thanks. Where going to play mostly hip hop. and one more thing should i put a fan on the reciever so it can stay cool?

I haven't tried this but some receivers let you set a maximum volume.

yeah I can set the level CAl to a low number to prevent some one from raising it to a dangerouse volume. any other tips?

whats a PA system? are those like DJ speakers?? how much would that cost? i think i have a mutual friend who might have a set up.

Just get a quick el cheapo receiver at a pawn shop and some cheap *** speakers. Leave the good stuff at home. Just my advice from past military party experiences.

If possible, put the receiver in a different room from the party, with just the speakers (and source) in the party room. And lock the door to that room with the receiver (if there is no lock on the door, install one).

Another option is to only invite responsible people to the party.

Also, put the grills back on the speakers. You are asking for trouble with them off.

When I drink, things that sound very loud to me when sober, 0 dB reference level for instance, do not sound that loud at all to me when drinking. Also my ability to perceive distortion is greatly reduced too. It is something to keep in mind when partying. The same effect that causes people to talk louder causes people to turn their stereo a lot louder than they normally do when they are drinking.

Deciding on a level you don't want to go past before the drinking starts is a good idea. Also a sober set of ears should be better at hearing distortion if you have some unforgiving source material that starts causing distortion before you get to the volume ceiling that you decided on earlier.

If your receiver does not have a MAX VOLUME LIMIT function, then you could use an external amp with volume control.

Do you have one of those amps (pro-style) with volume control on it?

First you turn the volume on the ext amp all the way down.

Then you turn the volume of the receiver all the way up to max.

Then you turn the volume of the ext amp to the level that you think should be the absolute MAX - say 90dBA.

So even if some drunk fool turns the volume on the receiver to max, the sound will never be more than 90dBA.

Resetup your receiver as follows:

-Set the subwoofer crossover to the highest possible value, IE 180hz so that the power being sent to the mains is as low as possible.
-Set the subwoofer trim 5-8db higher than normal. people tend to focus on bass at parties so if the bass is obnoxious enough they won't care if your mains are being under used.
-Disconnect any surround or center speakers so that the only possible mode is stereo. The worst amp killer is multichannel music / party mode

Move the party to someone else s home. I did that and even paid the other person a few bucks.. No trash to clean up, no furniture to clean, nothing broken and my audio/video equipment was saved from picky fingers.
