"Cable break-in" does what, exactly? Has anyone seen a plausible explanation?
Here are two threads where I offered to send 'burned in' and new cables randomly marked.

I use these threads to show the rampant back peddling and sudden lack of faith in their 'religion'. Be careful, insightful thought and approach to a problem that happens to embarrass members will get you plenty of hate mail:D

Here is a good question:

Why are some cables cryogenically(frozen) treated and yet others burned in with a cable cooker?

And either way both are 'better' than straight up untreated cable.

After reading the Polk's thread above, I found a "jewel" on DK's signature:

"Knowledge, without understanding, is a path to failure."~DK

Looking who's talking though ;)

While I read through the Polk Forum thread (and found it eye opening) I didn't see that AVS thread. To me that really re-affirms the subjectivist view on this. That and I don't have that kind of scratch for expensive cables. Hell the Marantz mono-blocks you helped me find were at the top of my budget at the time. I couldn't imagine spending $160 on cables which is what my amps cost combined:eek:

"You need to calm down". DK

A few years after I started working at a stereo store (late '70s), a customer came in to return some equipment and clearly had no idea how to deal with people. It's not easy to PO the guy who offered to help him, but this Clyde did just that. What really happened is, the guy had a bad receiver and decided that he needed new speaker wire and when the new wire didn't cure the problem, he thought he could just return it. It wasn't pre-packaged and while it could have been resold, the guy was such a knob that the sales guy came into the back room and said he couldn't deal with the idiot, so the store owner went out there. Words were exchanged, people got mad and at the end, the guy yelled "I want to return this sh#@tty wire!!!!" and the owner said "You can't! It's used!". The guy finally left and the wire was probably fine but....

Although I haven't seen it, I'm sure someone markets speaker cable as "Made for tube amps" or "Made for solid state amps".

Re: the question of "Why not use the ones that came in the box?", I have used them in some cases and they were fine. Sounded good, didn't fall apart unless they were man-handled or chewed on and the customer wouldn't have known the difference. However, as I have posted a few times, the cheapos I had connected to my first DVD player sucked (I had previously used these cables for my VCR). I was severely disappointed in the sound, compared with my CD player and the only difference in how it was connected was the cables. The CD player sounded great and the DVD player did too, after I connected it through the CD player's cables. I have to think they had some kind of problem but I can't risk wasting time and money on crappy cables, so I'll never use that particular kind again but I do stock low priced cables. I won't, however, gouge a customer on things that make little/no difference in sound when reliability could be an issue. I would rather have reliable than super-special-chocolaty-OH MY GOD! I'VE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE THIS! cables. The IXOS cables with XLR on both ends were a complete joke.
