Ok, here's the set-up:

1. Newest model ps3 slim capable of everything under the sun
(lpcm 7.1 uncompressed on down the line..... dts true hd dd ultimate hd of doom.... etc.)

2. Old Kenwood vr 505 reciever capable of everything under the sun from 2003. lol! (dolby digital 5.1, dts 5.1 and pcm)

If it matters, they are connected by toslink digital optical as the vr 505 has no hdmi inputs.

I'm using the ps3 to play the movie "The 5th Element" blu-ray that has 3 possible audio signals: french dolby digital (5.1), english Dolby true hd and lpcm 5.1 uncompressed.

When I select the french, the dolby digital light comes on on my reciever as it should and I get the 5.1 descrete channels. When I select the dolby true hd, the same dolby digital light comes on and I again get all the descrete channels. I'm assuming the reciever is somehow downmixing it to regular dolby digital or whatever but that's not my question here.

When I select the linear pcm track, I get a slightly louder 5.1 descrete playback... and the dts light comes on on the reciever. The case and disk don't mention a dts track. The playstation itself is set up to output either pcm, dolby digital or dts. when I hit the display button on the ps3, it says, dolby digital 5.1 for the french, dolby true hd 5.1 for track 2 and linear pcm 5.1 for track 1. That's when my reciever says its decoding dts.

So my curiosity is this... does anyone know why the kenwood vr 505 would say it's decoding a linear pcm signal into dts?

Thanks,

victorfrost

Here's your problem. Toslink can only transfer DTS, DD5.1, and 2 channel LPCM.

You need HDMI in order to transfer DTS-MA, Dolby TrueHD, and LPCM 5.1 or 7.1

Interesting....

I'm new to this so that helps considerably. thanks. :)

So how the heck is is my reciever ending up with a 5.1 dts signal when im sending it a 5.1 channel pcm signal from the playstation? especially off of a disk that doesn't even have a dts track?

The downmix indicator doesnt come on on the kenwood vr 505 either. only the "digital, autosound and dts" comes on.

Like I said, this is really simply a curiosity as im getting all 5 channels running descretely and im pleased with the sound quality.... i'm just rather baffled that i'm putting a pizza in the oven and ending up with strombli's! hehe.

It really seems like a true dts output as its slightly louder than the dd 5.1 track and i feel it is a little more crisp and deep. The playstation isn't capable of taking an uncompressed lpcm 5.1 track (this is what is listed on the disk and in the menu) and converting it to dts?
