anyone still purchase Standard Def DVD?

On the topic in hand, does anyone here know if blind tests have established that people conclusively hear the difference between DVD and BD soudtracks? After all:

1. Many here will be aware just how unreliable non-blind test results can be and should therefore be considered suspect, and;

2. DVD audio was encoded in such a way as to sound as close to the soundtrack as possible even in light of a loss of original audio information

I think some of us are just more flexible than others.

Obviously, I'm not very flexible at all.

I will only buy blu-ray. I refuse to buy standard def DVD.

I really want to watch that prequel Battlestar Galactica Caprica series, but it's only available on DVD, so I'm not going to watch it.

Same thing with Showtime's Tudors - it's only available on DVD, so I'm not going to watch it.

I wish everything were available on BD. But too much of my favorite stuff, like 12 Kingdoms, Gaogaigar, Macross or Princess Tutu, were available only in Sd. flexibility is just a necessity because of how freaking good these series were. Od have watched em on VHS if I had to.

I personally don't have any issue with DVD audio, I only choose a BD for the increased video resolution. Would be interesting to see what some real test results were though.

Not only will I only buy blu-ray, but if it's not 2.35:1, I will almost certainly pass as well. Having a 2.35 screen makes you never want to watch 1.78/1.85 again. The only 1.78's I will buy are music blu-rays or kids movies.

I find it strange that people want movies made to fit their screens, rather than wanting good movies. When I watch something like Casablanca, I want it in approximately 4:3. I always want to watch a movie the way it was intended to be seen, not formatted for my screen.

+1. The medium on which the movie is stored on should not detract from the movie itself.

Some of the kids movies are picked up for cheap. Blue ray movies don't grow on trees.

Nah, I don't really mess with standard definition anymore. I'm a renter, so, if it's offered in Blu-Ray I rent it in Blu-Ray. Maybe it's a buck more or something, but, it's never much.

The only time I actually do go for standard def is on an iPad or laptop, it downloads quick (nice when I'm on crappy hotel wireless) and want a lot of movies for a long flight or something.

In other news, many still buy standard def DVD.

Dude, there's a ton of blu-ray porn. Porn industry is generally super fast at adopting new technology. There was 3D porn not long after Avatar hehe. Also can thank porn for being on the forfront of a lot of the streaming technology today (NetFlix, AppleTV streaming...)

The armature stuff is even mostly professionally shot and then just made to 'look' armature. Since the cameras are so good now, generally the reduction is quality might even be done in post-process. I mean, a Canon 5D mk.ii for 2700 with a kit lens can shoot 1080p video (good enough even some episodes of House were filmed with it, obviously decked out, but still the same body). It's cheap to do high quality HD video now.

Then there are the high end shoots, which even Red One cams used (4096x2304 resolution, so, even Blu-Ray can't take advantage of the resolution), lighting, stylists, hair, makeup, grips, catering, fluffers (hehe).

I don't buy Blue Ray nor DVD. Waste of money and inefficient. I keep .aac for playback at home and 320kbs .mp3 for portable use. Easy way to go IMHO.

Right now I am running two 500 GB HDD on my desktop machine. Gonna sell them and get one SSD for my desktop and two 1 TB Western Digital Caviar Blacks. Going to put the blacks in a 1 terabyte NAS with Raid 1 configuration on gigabit network. Then dump all of my data on it and access it from my laptop and desktop machine. Simple and easy.

I have 2 @ 1TB external drives already in my PC running in RAID 1 backed up to an external 1TB HDD.

They are almost full, and they don't have a single movie on them, it's all audio. flac16 and flac24 mainly.

If I was to have the 250 Blu-ray discs I own backed up I would need several 2TB HDD's and I don't have that many ports.

I find on a calibrated plasma the further-compressed blu-ray encodes don't look as good as the original and the uncompressed ones are just too big for not just HDD storage but bandwidth as well.

With so many Blu-ray Discs well under $20 and many under $10 it's an easy decision to make.

I haven't bought a DVD unless it was something rare and niche that's never coming to Blu-ray since 2005.

I have only been buying Blu-ray since I bought my PS3 (1st generation). Since I bought the PS3, as I mentioned previously in this thread, I have bought almost no SD DVDs unless they were something not likely to come to BD. Lately, I haven't even been buying BDs

So given the exact same 16 bit 44100 PCM audio source file what is the exact difference in storage size between FLAC and ALE?
