Turntable upgrade question

I am torn about whether I should upgrade my tt or not. Currently I have a Debut III upgraded with 2m blue, speed box, and acryl-it platter. My amp is the Outlaw RR2150. I use the phono connection on the Outlaw and I have Thiel CS1.6s. I have been thinking about upgrading the turntable to something in the $1500-$2000 range (I really like the Clearaudio Concept). Does anyone think the upgrade would be worth the money? Should I be thinking going in a different direction here? TIA, and sorry to make my second post a broad question.

That would be a big upgrade and you would probably notice some not so subtle changes in the sound.

I also think you will gain in sound quality but I am not sure if it is worth spending that much money on such upgrade. I find the convenience of HD FLAC audio files out weigh the perceived better sound quality of vinyls. I actually find some of the FLAC that I have now sound very similar to vinyls, but without the audible noises.

I would just upgrade your cartridge to the Ortofon Black.

If you want to go beyond that, you will have to spend a lot of money and get a turntable on which you could mount an SME arm.

The problem with teh Debut is that you cannot adjust the verticle tracking anglle of the tone arm so one is limited by geometry to the cartridges one can use. Maybe they changed this on the current model years of the Debut. That is one reason why I sprung for the Xpression which was their next model up.

Thanks for that info. In that case Xpression is the cheapest in that line you can recommend.

Then he should get the Xpression and the Ortofon Black.

If you're a DIYer, you might be able to get this one for a good price, which would be a significant upgrade to your current table:

http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-THORENS-TD-125-MK-II-PARTS-REPAIR-/190533221128?pt=Vintage_Electronics_R2&hash=item2c5caa3b08

This model appears to have the SME 3009 Series 2 arm, which is one of the best arms SME ever made and has all the adjustability you will need.

There are also a lot of parts still available for this table:

Finally, there's also one without the need for repair, but it has the stock Thorens tonearm instead of the SME:

They have not, still no adjustment for the vertical tracking angle but I think the Debut III can in fact use the 2M red and blue but probably won't benefit from the bronze and black for other reasons. I traded in my Debut III for the Xpression but I can't afford the black anyway so I am convincing myself the red is the best, best color anyway...:D

The Xpression's tonearm is much better than the Debut's as well. When I bought my Xpresion, from the dealer who was also selling Rega, he said that the Xpression was almost on par with the old Rega Planar P3. I got mine for $499. I do not feel the need to upgrade unless I cna get one of these at cost close to a grand.

It is no SME but it is a carbon fibre arm. It also can be fitted with the top line 2M series (black) that even TLSG approves. The Debut can work with the Red but that is it.

You did better than me on price if it came with the Red. I could not find anything for less than $699on line, not even those that are fitted with cartridges cheaper than the Red.

That price seems to the MSRP for the Xpression III. I picked up the Xpression II . The store was clearing tei rinventory of them to make room for the XpressionIII. I did luck out.
