my options to run outdoor speakers

I am looking to put some outdoor speakers up but not sure if I can accomplish this. I have the Yamaha HTR 5960. I am running 5.1 and running the speakers through the preouts to my Emotiva amp. I dont think this reciever has a second room option? How can I go about connecting them? Is it possible. They do have presence but sure what that is for.
Do I need a new reciever?

Your receiver doesn't have zone 2 output, so you will want/need an amplifier to power the speakers outdoors and a volume control. Typically you place the volume control outside near the speakers so you can easily adjust it.

The amplifier can be about any model with 40+ watts or so to run the speakers.

A surround receiver is overkill for what you are looking for, but does give you some switching capability. This will give you a single source with volume control

If I need another amp I would rather upgrade receiver for other reasons as well(hdmi) . So I can't use pre outs for home theater, and then speaker terminals for outside with A or B spkr function?b

You could use a second 2 channel receiver for source switching and volume control for that area by connecting all of the sources' analog outputs to that receiver and if you're using any of the analog inputs on the AV receiver, you can use the REC OUT on that one to send audio to the 2 channel receiver's TAPE INPUT.

It does have Zone B functionality using the Speaker B terminals, but it is not independent of the main zone. Since you're using the separate amp, you could play main/B zones AND/OR but you have no separate volume controls for each zone through the receiver.

If you're like me, I never use both zones simultaneously, it'll work just fine.

Ok now we are getting somewhere. So I can run preouts and speaker front terminal B at the same time with no harm to the receiver? When I watch home theater I can hit speaker b and outdoor would be off? I can't however have b terminals on and preouts turned off I assume. I understand the volume controls not separate. I just want to b sure preouts n terminal b can be run together.

Yes you can, see Zone Set on pg. 96. Think of Speaker A/B as Zone Main/B

Well I got the outdoor speakers all hooked up. I'll have to post pics. Hardest part was getting the passage way from 1st floor to basement. Pretty easy install. I have outdoor speakers running off zone b. Main zone is through preouts with emotiva amp. I looked at the manual and still can't figure out how to turn off pre outs while only playing terminal b. When I go to multi zone option on receiver and select zone b only the sub turns off and the main fronts stay on ?
I end up having to turn off the emotiva to turn off the pre outs. Thoughts? It will get easier when I get the new reciever.
