Which receiver, please help...

Hello all,
I am currently building a home theater and I have never owned any audio gear, other than a cheap HT in a box.

I've been reading a ton of posts about receivers and features etc. My budget is around $1000 for receiver. I've been looking at the paradigm monitor 7 5.1, or 7.1 speakers.

My questions I need advice, help on are
1. Currently I dont use any inputs on my HT receiver such as Ipod docks, sirius inputs or anything like that. However, I do have a sirius sub. and run a stiletto and have a boombox unit to plug it into when listening in the house (which has terrible sound). I do plug my laptop into it while watching movies though, via a 3.5mm to rca plug.
Should I just do the same as I am doing now with a new reciever so should I find one that has the input features for sirius etc?

2. Is it worth paying for the features such as network radio, or DLNA streaming when I can access both audio and video via my PS3?

I've been looking at the Athem MRX-300 after a local shop told me it was a very good receiver and they are using it to power very expensive speakers etc. I did listen to it and it sounds good, but being new to this, Im not sure I know what Im listening for.
The Marantz 5005 or 6005 are a little under and a little over $1000. I have not listened to either one, but most seem to review them quite well.

The Yamaha RX-A1000 is also around that same price point, and seems to have a hell of a lot more "features" than the Anthem or the Marantz lines. Am I sacrificing a lot of quality for these "features" that Im not sure I really need??

Please chime in and give me some help.

Inputs I need are HDMI for PS3, HD sat receiver, Laptop input via HDMI (macbook).

Thank you in advance!

The marantz receivers are both good choices as they are both well under your $1000.00 budjet, the 6005 at Onecall is going for $679, I would also look at some of the new Onkyos, the TX-NR709 looks to be a winner and have all the features you could want, it has Audyssey's MultEQ XT which by the way is second on the list of their four tier room correction feature, second only to XT32. I particularly have always liked onkyo and especially the 2011 model 709, completely revamped case, it looks impressive,. There is a quick look at it on Audioholics product reviews. The Marantz 6005 is no slouch by a long shot, and at $679 it's also hard to ignore. Hope this helps.

the features like network radio or DLNA are only worth if you plan to use them.

Recently upgraded the crap HT in a box I had... you're in for a damn special treat!

Do you plan on ever using Sirius? You think you'll want the option in the future? If yes, then the answer is yes. If you don't think you'll ever bother with it, and are pretty sure, then don't look for one that offers it. If you find a receiver that has all the features you want and it also offers Sirius connections, then I'd say buy that one; no point in skipping one just because it has extra features, right? :)

2. Is it worth paying for the features such as network radio, or DLNA streaming when I can access both audio and video via my PS3?
I NEVER thought I'd stream music from my laptop to the receiver I have. I ended up with a receiver that offered it and after trying it out, I'm happier than a pig in poop that I got it as an option, as I'm using the laptop as my main music box on the receiver and don't have to plug any wires into it to do it. It's a great feature, but ONLY if you think you'll use it. If you compare two models and the only different feature is the DLNA option and it costs $50 more, then go with the cheaper model. Though if the difference is only $50 and you can swing it, I'd recommend the one with more features obviously, as you might just find that one feature you don't want to use now is the one feature you wish you had in the future which means a potentially expensive upgrade, with an annoying sell on eBay or audiogon or similar, to offload the old one.

For me, it's nice to be able to stream the music from the laptop without having to turn the TV on. I can control everything from the laptop and don't need the TV running to do it, unlike my using the PS3, which is why I don't use MINE that way. If you use the PS3 for DLNA options and don't mind running the TV just to listen to music, then in the end the DLNA option is worthless for you. I don't know what you plan on doing with your system so I can't recommend much else here.

I've been looking at the Athem MRX-300 after a local shop told me it was a very good receiver and they are using it to power very expensive speakers etc. I did listen to it and it sounds good, but being new to this, Im not sure I know what Im listening for.

Find a local shop that has the speakers you want AND the receivers you want and do thorough listening tests. Use the same CDs (don't take anything that has a low bit rate to it, as most good speakers are horribly unforgiving when playing it back, unless it has something similar to the "restorer" option my Denon has, and even then you can definitely tell the difference between low vs high (or even FLAC) bit rate tracks without question.

The Yamaha RX-A1000 is also around that same price point, and seems to have a hell of a lot more "features" than the Anthem or the Marantz lines. Am I sacrificing a lot of quality for these "features" that Im not sure I really need??

Audioholics has a first look up for the Anthem. Sounds like a good receiver to me. It's "only" 80w per channel though, so you'll want to make sure it can drive the speakers you choose.

The Marantz 6005 is 110w per channel, so it should have an easier time driving speakers, though, if you're eyeing up bookshelf speakers, either option would be good.

Audioholics also has a first look for the Yamaha and it sounds great.

Let me ask, do you plan on upscaling any old sources? You want to use a DVD player but upscale to 1080p? Do you ever use other sources that would benefit from an upscale? If so, you might want to look for something with better upscaling options, but if you just want to plug in your laptop, anything you've listed will work well for you in my mind. The next step up in the Yamaha line gets you better upscaling. You may also want to look into Denon options as well.

Good luck and happy listening!

Yamaha RX 465

I recently upgraded to Yamaha, it's the 525 watt and I use a powered sub, Yamaha YST-SW216, I am very satisfied. My speakers are Cambridge SoundWorks center and KLH Titan's rear, my fronts are Sony 1000 bookshelf speakers. I do HTPC toslink from an Asus Xonar DS-R sound card to the Yamaha RX-465.

Given your budget and needs, check out the Denon AVR-3311 and 4310. Yes they have features you may not need but it is hard to find a 2 year or older model that does not have those features except for the entry level ones that you should avoid. If you are sure you don't need 3D then the 4310 is the one to beat otherwise the 3311. It is highly possible the 3311 has most if not all, of the same internal electronic components that the Marantz SR-7005 (currently their flag ship believe it or not) has. If true, it is a great deal at below 1K. The 4310 offers a better amp section, more robust power supply, better DAC, Denon Link, ability to decode SACD, HDCD, and more.

I would love to stream directly from my laptop to the reveiver with out having to run it through the tv so that is something I should be looking into.

I currently have a stiletto by sirius that I have a home dock for. The home connect to connect directly to receiver (from what I can find) needs its own subscription, so i will continue to connect it via RCA plug as as audio input, as I dont want to pay for 2 subscriptions.

I've read good and bad reviews on Onkyo, but thier TX-NR809
seems to do everything and has had some good reviews. Am I giving up build quality over an Anthem or Marantz or Denon to have all these options/features?

Thank you again!

Once you have a receiver capable, check to ensure you have software available to allow you to do it. Windows 7 and XP/Vista have Media Center which is usable, but you said you have a Mac so that won't help for obvious reasons! I actually have Win 7 and chose to use Twonky (do Google search for it) after trialing it because for whatever reason the B&W Society of Sound FLAC files (24bit 96hz samlping rate) music would cause the Denon to crash through Media Center. Twonky plays them perfectly through the Denon, though I can't tell if it is downsampling. Either way, it sounds glorious at that resolution.

Can't really comment on the Stiletto as I have no experience with it. If what you currently have works OK for it, it will on the new receiver as well without a doubt.

Looking purely at specs, that looks like a ******* GREAT receiver. Since it's just been released you'll likely have a difficult time finding it for the next few months and you won't find it at a discount anytime soon.

That being said, are you losing anything in build quality? Coming from someone who owns a Denon, it is a serious piece of kit and was a great price/performance piece for me. Many people will steer you towards THEIR preferred manufacturer. You really need to find somewhere to audition the setup you have (speakers included) or found a local place with a great return policy so you can try several receivers out and keep the one you like.

Some people swear by Onkyos. Some by Denon. Some by Marantz. Some by Anthem. Some by *insert manufacturer name here.* It all comes down to your personal listening preferences and what YOU like, not someone else. Read reviews and try to find someone who has needs similar to yours (and asking here doesn't hurt, certainly, but never take someone else's word for it if you can audition something properly).

Hope that helps!

Look at the Denon AVR-3311CI (around $800) or go with the NEW Denon AVR-3312CI (around $1K).

You will be happy with either one of them. They are VERY NICE AVR's.:)
