Don't be such a hater:) That's not a bad deal period and you know it.

Anyway, the Mint Linux is pretty good, and I like it so far. Like I have said in the past. If were not for a few apps, Aperture, imovie, final cut express, iweb I would probably use a Linux box as my main computer.
In that package yes its not a bad deal.

If windows were free it would still be a ripoff:p:D
security threat / resource hog etc aside, no other platform has the driver compatibility of windows, and that to me is a big difference maker. You avoid a LOT of hassle.

That used to be a HUGE issue with me and macs. It's not so much of one anymore. Most things just work right out of the box. Linux is much, much better now too.

Yes if you buy a Mac approved video card for a 60% markup it will work fine! :)

No but I'm with EV, when you step back and think about it the HCL for Windows 7 is just astounding. Most every piece of hardware works out of the box, and if not out of the box will be updated automatically through Windows Unpdate (unless its your NIC that needs drivers :)). Even most legacy hardware from 10 years ago still works.

Yeah they finally caught up with working out of the box with Apple. I took them a while:rolleyes:

Yes I do agree Win 7 is much better about it then previous versions. It is, however the ugliest OS out there and still just as clusterfu@#ed as always. I hate using it. If it were the only OS out there I honestly would not have a computer. Thank the Lord it is not.

Hey Guys, Linux looking like a mac!

Now you have to admit this looks pretty cool huh? :D The back and forward buttons don't look like that actually. Must have been something with the screen grab.

Upper right corner activates desktops.

Lower left corner activates Expose type window manager.

There plenty of way to apply themes to any OS, but think default Aero plus nice wallpaper is I need need to be comfortable in W7.

I usually pick my OS based general functionality, performance, security and compatibility;

Not based on how pretty they are...

p.s:
Remind me again how many games run on OS X natively ? ;)

I'm not here to bash (pun intended) Linux or OS X, but I wont stand for Win7 bashing ether :p

Actually there a lot more games for OS X then there used to be. I don't think Apple ever really cared about the game market that much or Jobs would have pursued game developers more vigorously than he did. They really don't need it anyway. They did just announce higher earnings than Microsoft last month or did you not hear about that? http://www.businessinsider.com/its-official-apple-earns-more-than-microsoft-2011-4

I just don't like the look of of Win 7 or how it functions at all. I also don't like KDE or Gnome by default and Enlightenment is just strange.

I don't know. I think Windows 7 is a very nice looking OS with all the glass:

I have played around with several Linux distros and I just couldn't use them as an every day platform because the software just isn't there and I don't like having to go into the command line frequently.

I could probably live on a Mac but I have no problem with Windows. It does everything I could ever want and Windows 7 is stable and easy to use. I also build my high spec machine for less than I'd pay for a mac and I still have a solid all aluminum case. ;)

Yeah but they copied all that from Apple and it just don't look or work as elegant as Snow Leopard does and thats the truth. Look, I have no vested interest in Apple or Microsoft and I can't stand Jobs because of his moronic political views even more than Gates. I am and ex IT guy who has used it all. Win 7's gui is a piss poor OS X imitation period.

Yes your desktop is kinda cool looking, but you are just loosely imitating the OS X gui and you still don't actually have all the functionality that OS X has with the GUI. Microsoft so ripped off Apple with Vista and 7 that is not even funny. I mean even the name for petes sake, Aero or Aqua. Come on at least try and sound different when your ripping off someone. Office 2008 and 11 somehow all of a sudden look like iwork did in 05. WTF? Yes Windows 7 is better than previous windows, Yes it is prettier, but it is a just an imitation of OS X that has been out since 2000 and they have been playing catch up ever since. Those are the facts.

Apple is not innocent in all this either. I mean they ripped off the their widgets from someone else and Microsoft ripped them off from Apple and then called them gadgets and they still did not get them right. I guess my whole point and beef with Microsoft is this; if your going to all the trouble to ripoff someone at least do it better. They do it half assed and claim it's the greatest and newest thing. WTF? well I don't think the public is buying it any longer.

I admit your computer is pretty nice looking, but it still don't look like this.;)

Rule #1) Anything is possible with Linux...
Hmm, isn't OpenSuse running very slightly themed kde ?
This should get you started - http://kde-look.org
I think thou first you need to change default's ubuntu gnome to kde

This theme specifically:

I have been running OpenSUSE, and currently running Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, both using Gnome... unable to make screencapture of the menu.... but it's exceedingly userfriendly and imho much better than anything the Ubuntu folks been doing

Oh yeah sorry! lol:)

Anyway, so far my Mint Linux box rocks! if I could just get a Aperture/Lightroom and iWeb replacement for it I would be good:(

I switched out PC's and put this in A dell with a 3.4ghz P4 and a new ATI Radion card that I got a few months back. My son is using the HP 3ghz with Win 7 until I get him a new mac. Could I upgrade the processor on this Dell? and if so what could I put in it. It is a dimension 8400.

ps It is my thread so I can derail it if I wish;):p

I really have nothing against MAC, they were quite innovative in 1984 :p

(I remember seeing this ad on TV)

The thing is I would be embarrassed to admit I owned one since MAC and Apple in general basically markets it's self as computers and devices for people who are not very smart.

But back to the subject at hand. My recent foray in Linux has been running Virtual Box. I have found that Windows XP under Virtual Box runs better than it does in Windows7 and MS Virtual PC...

Well you get the award for dumbest post of the year:rolleyes: Even the hard core PC guys here would not agree with that stupid and uninformed statement. Let's see what would I have to be embarrassed about? hmm how about the fact that I am running the most advanced consumer OS there is? Or the fact that it is stable and virtually virus free? how about the fact that I can run just about any OS on my mac in a virtual state via Parallels or VM ware, and with the ability to assign cores to the virtual machines you can run multiple os's side by side at or at near native speeds. Or how about the fact that I can also make my mac a dual, triple or quadrupole boot or more with any combination of OS you might want to have and I can also access those partitions via VMware or Parallels if need be.

So lets see what can I not do with a mac? Oh yeah play games. I can't play games on my mac. Oh wait I can just install Windows 7 and play any PC game I want and when it crashes, slows down or gets a virus I can boot back to OS X and delete the damn partition and start over. Better yet I can leave crappy windows off my mac and get a PS3, Xbox or Wii to play all the games one ever needs. Yep you win, macs and OS X are for not very intelligent people:rolleyes:

Virtual PC was outdated in 05 when the company that owned it suckered Microsoft into buying it. It was a complete failure.

I have found that XP runs better in boot camp or with VMware on a mac than on any PC I have ever put it on:p

Macs are as easy or as difficult as you want them to be.

Think you are so smart then open up a terminal and go to town. Same as any other UNIX machine. If you want some Linux apps on your mac then you go to places like this site http://www.macports.org/ports.php?by=platform&substr=linux You quite obviously don't know much about OS X.

I do love how computer snobs, usually PC zealots, think that a computer being hard to use somehow makes it better:rolleyes: If that were true then the AS 400 would be the system of choice for everyone.

The most popular and most supported Linux distros are those that are the most user friendly btw!

Installing Mint Linux would be another way. It is still Ubuntu with some improvements.

I love the way MAC fanboys get their panties all stuffed up their butts by the mere suggestion that a PC is just as good and possibly better in some aspects.

Pretty desktop do not impress me and frankly I have not seen anything that can be done on MAC OS that can not be done in Windows. But I do have several applications (not games ) for my work that have no MAC equivalent like Solid Edge and Altium.
