My sister's old tube big screen finally went south. She's looking for a new tv. Screen size is most important. She's not going to even spring for Hi Def so clearly the latest cutting edge TV is not needed here.

Anyone know of some great deals on just a decent LCD for her.

All things equal, a plasma will look better with SD than a LCD. Pro calibrators will concur.

However, all things aren't equal, and the scaler will be the key thing here.

Please tell her that Hi Def can be had for free, if she is willing to pay $30 for an antenna from Target/RadioShack/Amazon/Bestbuy. If not, she can make her own ugly one for much less.

Might as well get CBS, NBC, ABC, and others in 1080i, for free, IMO. (Hey, she'll already have bought the ATSC tuner that the TV comes with; I had to buy my tuner for my PJ)

I was thinking the same thing about the antenna. Good advice.

1080p + displays matter if the person watching REALLY cares. Frankly, I care more about a quality display than the resolution. Sure, both would be nice, but if I had a bottom of the line 1080p LCD or that Panasonic 720p plasma, to choose from, the plasma from Panny would win hands down as THE goto choice.

I had this similar decision a few years ago and ended up with a 720p 60" Pioneer. It is, by far, the best display in our home.

Don't sweat the small stuff I would say. Instead, get the Panasonic. The price is right, the size is good, the quality is top notch. If she is sitting more than 8' away from that screen, she wouldn't even notice the difference between 720p and 1080p anyway.

Oh, and I think that TV is compatible with 10880p input if needed.

Otherwise, I'm drooling over the new Samsung plasmas...

Not budget!

Does she need to be concerned about burn-in or other screen issues with the newer plamas?
One day, eventually, she very well may experience IR (image retention) with the display, perhaps after having a ticker up on the screen for some hours, while not in film/cinema mode, but a color-inaccurate-but-brighter mode like standard, dynamic, etc. It will "wash out" easily. I have not heard of a Pana plasma burn in story, since, um, before I ever got interested in this hobby. I think they're on their 14th generation already.

I also concur with Panasonic plasmas. Off the top of my head, the last 5-6 TVs that I helped friends and family shop for, all but one were Pana plasma, all the way from 768p 42" to flagship 1080p 65" plasmas. The only exception was because of a $2000 LCD TV that died in less than three years, and the buyer had a Costco-Amex card (good for free 3yr warranty thru Costco). In this case, there were only two options for Pana plasmas, and I did not concur with either choice for her uses. And it was I that pushed for the use of that card and store, because she was pretty distraught over the matter.

I think that SD on a Pana (or Pioneer) plasma looks pretty close to the quality of HD-lite on a LCD TV, from distance (say 4x the display width as viewing distance, as a ballpark guess).

My only trepidation is the possibility of a reflective panel, as opposed to some of the matte panels of LCDs. Obviously, she's not going to care about black detail, so we don't have to worry about black retention or anything like that. I'd look into the quality of the AR (anti reflective) filter of any Pana plasma choice if lighting is a concern.

In Sam's with all the floresent lighting, the LCD may look best. But when you are at home in normal lighting, the plasma will look best.
Good luck convincing her of that though.

I am using my first plasma product a panasonic tc-P50-S. I really love the picture as far as black levels and shadow details compared to lcd. The sound on this particular model is terrible. Which probably isnt a problem for most people on this forum but might be for someone without any other speakers besides the tv ones.

Another thing to really consider is if there is any source of light in the room the tv in is. You see every little crack of light and it stands out sharply. Most plasma surfaces are very mirror-like. If in a room without complete control of ambient light, id go with lcd even though i dont personally like the picture. The antiglare screen ones any better?

I play some shooters like crysis, fallout, cod and have had no burnin issues. Just dont completely abuse it like some stores do and you shouldnt have a problem. This one has some burnin-clearing tools andsome other good burnin protection ones. Check for that, not all of them have that.o

I know there are plasmas and lcd a like that have superior pictures than my set that was around 900$ last christmass at best buy. Was really impressed with the bang for your buck you get with this one.

Looks a lot better after 200 hours of use and color calibration.

Sams Club - good choice.

$1,500 is a fair number, and a lot of TVs are there for that money.

This is a good way to go:

With a Square Trade 3 year warranty, it's right about $1,500 with free shipping. It's 55" instead of 50", and will deliver solid performance that will make her happy for quite a while.

Cheap is under $1,000, and that's not where she is at. $1,500 isn't in the great category, butt there are certainly a few decent options at that price.

Samsung has this...

Which is also worth considering - 51", so closer to the size requested.

Kind of tempting to go big...

Yeah, $1,500 will do her well.
