Building a new house with only one good spot for the fireplace with my plasma above. Would it be ok?

I suppose it would be useful to tape some Xmas stocking hooks to the bottom of the plasma? :D

Seriously, I'd probably to a heat check with the fireplace on and see how hot it is at your proposed mount location

It should be okay... Gas fireplace does not produce hot enough heat compare to wood fireplace, unless your gas fireplace is twice the average.

You must have a mantle above the fireplace to direct heat away from the screen.

If you are just building right now, then I would ask that you may want to consider how many times a day/week/year that fireplace will be on and how often the TV will be on and which truly should be afforded the higher priority.

Both, is the obvious answer, but if you can't give up either, then why not go ahead and spend a bit more to get a fireplace which is more condusive to TV placement above it?

That is, they have non-traditional low, wide fireplaces which are available. You get the nice fire, but instead of being stuck with a TV that is 4+ feet off the ground, you are able to maintain it at a lower viewing height and still keep your fireplace.

I'm NOT a fireplace expert, but I'm about to do some research on them to be able to make recommendations to homeowners and construction companies, but I did dig up this model, which is in line with what I'm talking about...

That site has a fair number of models which offer some more modern possibilities.

I can tell you from a users standpoint the over the fireplace location is bad. Your neck will never forgive you. Viewing your tv will become unpleasant. Believe me, I speak from a miserable experience!

The line of site issue is important, particularly as one ages. Severe neck problems can be caused by contantly looking up similarly to staring at a PC screen. The line of site should be parallel or slightly lower, but never up for any considerable length of time.

Second, who wants to stare at flames while viewing TV? There should be no ambient light directly in or closely peripheral to the line of site, particularly a light that is flickering constantly.

Pretend you are buying an old style tv. Where would you place it for optimal viewing? Now mount your flat screen in that vicinity. You will not be sorry.

Now, mount a painting over your fireplace!

Good Luck!
