New speakers suggestions

Just got my custom direct connection y-cables today, and will soon be bi-amping my newest 830's with (2) Denon POA-2200. That's an available 600W per speaker.

This is a 2-channel rig, and I was floored with just one amp. Found another, and couldn't pass-up the deal. Most have said it's a pointless pursuit, but it is supposed to be my hobby for goodness sakes.

I can see your point and I am attempting to by a complete set of speakers, fronts, rears, center, and sub. If we go ahead with the DT's w/ built in subs, we will probably skip another sub. However, nothing is decided yet...

Ten years ago when I bought mine I was impressed. Don't get me wrong, they do sound good. They go down to 20 hz. I also run 2subs, one goes down to 18 hz and the other to 22hz. I have them set to crossover at 80 hz, so it was a waste of money to get them powered towers, unless you're never planning on adding a sub or two then I guess it would be OK. With external subs added it seems like I am not getting my monies worth out of the towers. If you ever want to bi amp you're limited.

I believe that these are good speakers but this is outside of my budget. One question though, why use up some much real estate when the speakers only take up half. Is it to increase the base resonance?

No offense to Jeff, as I have never heard the 1030's.

The 830's fit the budget right on the money.

Also, the 830's are 2.5-way. Not 2-way. (2)mids(1)tweet. The 1030's just add a 5.25". There is plenty of mid in the 830's, and the added 5.25" is not needed.(IMO)

The company dropped the 1030 design after the QLS series, and continues to offer the 2.5-way as the top-of-the-line model to this day.

When you buy speakers with build in subs what you are buying is a pair of bookshelfs on top of a sub woofer. Mine you can go from using the sub to full range, but it's still not the same, I think, like a none powered speaker. That's just how I feel about powered speakers. Mine cost close to 5K, so they are not on the cheap side.

I guess it depends on which of the DefTech's chosen. The STS I would agree because they have 1 tweeter, 2 mid range, 1 long throw sub-woofer, and 2 radiators.

Additionally, the BP-8060ST's have 3 mids, 2 tweeters, 1 sub and 2 radiators.

Since the sub and the radiators are basically the same function but through different methods, I would agree.

I will have to rethink my stance on 2 ways.

btw: Klipsch doesn't build Energy speaker, but just bought the Energy company.
Current Energy speakers are built by Energy, but in short future Energy brand most likely will be winded down to complete shutdown

Energy is a pretty big selling brand, I doubt Klipsch would shut them down.

I look at every link that are shared with me. Maybe the reason that I thought the 830's would be too much was the pair pricing. Most speakers sell as each item. Still the problem is that I need to audition them. Send me a PM and tell me what part of CLT you live in. Thanks

I have created a large spreadsheet and I am in the process of eliminating speakers based on costs, specs... I am also weighing in the ability to audition each speaker. I might even contact some of these companies and see if they would send me a pair or so to audition. However, that depends on costs. For now, I have very limited time to go to different brick and mortar stores. Due to my time constraints and lack of a really good brick and mortar store, I suspect this will be drawn out longer than I would like.

I am also concerned about warranty's.

BoredSysAdmin - I only noticed when I auditioned some of the speakers that the Energy models all had the Klipsch name with the tag.

What do you think about Energy speakers? To be honest, I didn't even consider Energy because I have no knowledge of this line and I get worried about what will happen when the merger is complete. What if Klipsch turns this brand into one of its own and eliminates the name. What if takes the best and dissolves the rest. I consider all of these things. Maybe I am just being paranoid but better to be cautions when I anticipate keeping these around another 20 years.

dkane360 - See what happens when I step away from the speaker world for 20 or so years. Everything changes! I never even heard of Energy speakers in those days. Could be they were not as well known or not in the store where I purchased my JBL's.

I have had my Quarts in my HT since '03. No need to be concerned about a warranty. It would take an absolute idiot to ruin these speakers.

We are going to audition some speakers at Audio Advice in our city. They appear to carry the lines that we are interested in. So far I have narrowed the choices down to PSB, DefTech, and Golden Ear. There are many fine speakers out there but it really comes down to sound, cost, and what we feel would be best for our house.

My thoughts are PSB would save us some money. Def Tech and Golden Ear are pricer. We have heard Def Tech but now we want to hear the others.

You are doing the right thing; bring your CDs and listen to as many speakers as you can and buy the ones that sound the best. Make sure the store as a good 30-day return policy so that if the speakers don't sound great in your home, you can return them for something else.

Golden Ear's TritonCinema Two are nice speakers. These are a little more than I wanted to spend and a little taller (48"). But the sound was great!!

My question to everyone is this: The towers have side facing Planar Infrasonic Radiators. My entertainment unit would not allow these sounds to travel cleanly. In fact, the placement would have the sides pointing against the entertainment unit itself. What do you think this would mean to the sound? The towers are front ported. I just worry that the entertainment unit would reduce the radiators woofer response and over-all reduce woofer response. Make sense or am I worried about nothing?

For those that might ask, at this time we cannot move the speakers out from the wall and cabinets any further. The room is not that big and a table would be in the way.

That is why you need to ask the store if you can return the speakers if they don't sound right in your home with your situation.

When I had the Def Tech BP7000, facing the active subwoofers towards side walls did not sound as good to me. Facing the radiators towards the walls did not affect the sound much.

The kicker is that our anniversery is today and waiting 6 months or so might jepordize how much we are willing to spend. I need to continue watching for good sales. I just need to learn which companies are the best and which models... I need to slow down so we don't end up with something we don't like.

i would look at the Jamo C809 towers, too.

AcuDefTechGuy - Good point, I will give the place a call and see what they say. I would be surprised if he didn't have a good refund policy but one never knows until asked!


highfigh - I have not found any store in my area that sells any Jamo speakers. Without an audition, we are not interested. Yours is the second suggestion to review Jamo speakers so there must be some merit to them...

For others - One of the selling points beyond the sound is the size of the center channel. While others have no issue with a large center channel, we are forced to us something smaller. Since the center needs to match the towers... The Triton II's were a good choice. 27" W x 4.75" H x 2.5" D This speaker can fit in front of our screen. The others could not and the entertainment unit could not house anything this wide... An example is the C 80 CEN which is 8.3 x 19.7 x 11.1. 8.3" high. This won't fit in front of the screen but 4.75 will. Even the width is larger than my largest shelf at 17.5" wide. The SuperSat 50C center even though small, still provided adequate voice reproductions.

Anyway, thanks for these suggestions and I would love anything else in the lines of gotcha's or suggestions so we don't buy something we can't live with.
