I just picked up an old Consumer reports (August 2010) I had bought and noticed an article on headphones (w/mic) for smart phones.
In a lean field of 8 models, the on-ear $180 Monster Beats Dr. Dre "Solo" is the only one which managed to score lower than the $30 "Apple Earphones w/remote and mic". The Apple rated good (empty circle) for sound quality and the Monster rated fair (black lower half of circle)!
It sure would suck to spend that kind of coin and end up with worse sound.

I'm not the least bit surprised. I tried the original Monster Beats by Dr. Dre headphones when they first came out. They were extremely disappointing in terms of sound quality and literally unuseable for home theater since they produced a very loud buzzing/static when connected to my Onkyo TX-SR705 receiver - a problem I haven't been able to repeat with any other headphones.

Where Monster used to be merely over-priced, with the Beats line, they have crossed over into true Bose territory by not only being over-priced, but also under-performing. Even American Idol has given up on using the Beats microphones because of so many complaints of the quietness of the singers this season.

The marketing claim is that the Beats headphones reproduce music the way that Dr. Dre hears it in his studio. All I can say is that the man is obviously deaf in that case and I feel bad for him :(

Dre's probably never even heard a Dre Beats or anything that sounds like it.

Don't lie, you too would sell out in an instant if Monster gave you the chance :D
