Suggestion on Speakers for new apartment please

Hello all, I've been searching a few forums and this one seems to be the best for my question/problem.

I just moved into a new loft apartment and am looking for some speakers. The new place is completely open with a loft/bedroom upstairs.

Some details:
Receiver: Denon 1911
Room size: 14.5 x 18 x ~16 high cathedral ceilings
Budget: ~$300

Some concerns:
- filling the room with sound for relatively cheap
- neighbors below and to the side, so probably no sub at this point (maybe)

These are 2 systems that I have been looking at (can't post links yet) -
Fluance AVHTB+ Surround Sound Home Theater 5 Speaker System
Energy 5.1 Take Classic Home Theater System

Some questions:
- Anyone have experience with these 2 speaker systems? Do you think they will be enough to fill the room?
- Should I just go with 2 fronts and a center? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks for your time and any suggestions!

Read this guy's 2 threads in Loudspeaker for just about every option known to man for budget speakers.

Filling a room with sound is different for different folks but 300 bucks ain't gonna do it for most. Getting good sound at a moderate level may be the best that can be hoped for with that.

I've never heard those speaker systems you mentioned so I won't comment on that.

That is a large room to attempt to fill with a $300 system. I will advise you as everyone has advised me to buy the Fronts for now since you have a great Receiver and buy the rest when you can.

You can get the Infinity P363's for a little over $300 and that will give you great 2-channel sound for the time being. Then, the PC351 center costs around $150 and the P153 Surrounds you can get for $100-$150 as well. I think the P363's should have enough bass to handle music listening and even movie watching which will allow you to leave the Sub out for now so you don't piss off the neighbors.

I think you would be much happier going this route than trying to install a small/cheap system in there and being disappointed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice.. I'll check out the spearkers you reference.

Melee, I read your thread yesterday (well, most of it) concerning getting a sub in an apartment and your speaker dilemma.. good read and a lot of advice in there.

edit: Alex, the link in your thread didn't work

Yes, they definitely went above and beyond in there. :D

He was linking you to my threads. The other one was just arguing though and got closed.

The one you read through is the one he was referencing. It basically covers all speakers in the budget region as well as how to choose the right setup for you.

I decided that it's not worth the worry or hassle to have a Sub. If you have nice Floorstanding Speakers, they can reach down to low 40's in Hz or even mid-high 30's. Any Sub that you get with a cheaper boxed system isn't going to do any better than that and you won't have to worry about the sounds reverberating through the walls.

Are you saying the P363 are $300/pair? The cheapest I see with a quick search is ~$250/each.. which would be $500/pair obviously. Is that what you ended up paying?

edit: actually just found a deal on a pair for $313.93.. will have to look at this more closely later

You have to contact them. Just use the live chat feature on their site.

It comes out to $313.93 for both Speakers + $29.99 Shipping Each so your total for both speakers (they are excellent speakers, btw) would be $373.91 Shipped. As you said, the cheapest I've seen them elsewhere was like $500.
