I have a dumb question...

OK, I've got a 6.1 setup. Will add two XPA-3 Emotiva amps soon. After I free up the speaker outputs on the receiver, what's to stop me from running, say, an extra pair of front speakers, mounted in the wall above the TV, off the receiver itself? Like I said, that might be a dumb question. I just think it would really open up the front sound stage.

A complete mess with comb filtering galore.

Dolby Pro Logic IIz also does height channels. What receiver do you have?

You'll probably get better responses if you start your own thread instead of hijacking someone elses. I'm still looking for responses as well.

before you just add other speakers all nimbly pimply, I would try a better pair of front speakers.

Try some actual towers with more umph.

The step up on inwalls would be the SA-LCR3s, and it's only one more driver. I have a ten month old child, that's why I don't want towers that she wants to pull up on and possibly knock over.

I assume you've listened to the SA-35s? They pack a pretty solid punch.

I have heard a few paradigm in walls, and some other "high end brands". I just never felt impressed.

Why I would suggest towers to you is you can do a bit more with placement and maybe some better angles or toe in would help.

I'll tell you right now that I have never heard an inwall speaker that is as good as a similar, or lower priced bookshelf/tower. So I am biased.

I don't know how much you paid or the cost difference but the studio 60's are almost 60 pounds and with spikes on would be tough to topple unless the child it really rowdy.

I have a 160 pound mastiff and he doesn't do anything to my 60 pound logans.

There is a very good reason most of us do not use more than 3 speakers up front - it is because we know better.:D

As already mentioned, comb filtering will take effect and disrupt your sound.

Now you could use those empty speaker posts on your receiver to output to another room if you like - kind of like a second zone, except it will be playing identical sound as your first room.:D

But I would not use more than 3 speakers up front.

I wouldn't even use more than 2 surround speakers because I can't tell the difference between 5.1 vs. 7.1. If you want your surround channels to sound louder, just increase the surround channel levels.:D

Thanks for the input, guys, I was just curious more than anything.

As for the up front, the in walls are actually angled in via custom boxes made for them. As for the dog vs child, dogs don't do things just to "see what happens" and aren't nearly as creative!!

I call shennanagins! No child is as creative as my dog. :p

My dog ocassionally does science exparements. And he's certainly more likely to randomly decide that the doorbell is an intruder and stampede through the home running in circles making the windows shake with his bark. For the record the 2 cats I have also see how high they can climb and one is 25 lbs. I also sit another 190 pound mastif, and two two year old (human) cousins. :D

My point is, human or beast can just as easily stab a stick... or lamp etc, through the grill of those in walls as they could a tower speaker. The other point is that if you are willing to spend a bit more on more speakers, take what you have back and just get a better pair of fronts. I can promise you that you will get better sound out of tower speakers than in wall speakers.*

If that doesn't work for you still though. If you can change the toe of the speakers try to adjust them untill you can hear a difference. What is lacking from your current experience?

*DIY and custom designs such as custom/active crossovers excluded.

The speakers are already angled in. There is nothing really wrong with my current setup, just always wanting to see what I can do more.

As for poking through, the Paradigm's have metal grills. I could always go with a pair of Sig-LCR5s, but really don't want to spend 4 grand on a pair of speakers.
