i donno if its the right section...please move the topic if its not :)
so guys i have a 5 yr old sony mhc-gnz8d home theatre player

Link for Specification :
http://www.gandhiappliances.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2092

i havent touched this system since 2 yrs and now all of a sudden i hv gained interest in it but when i do the connections and try to power it on..the display shows loading..and suddenly the whole system goes off and the I/O light on the power button keeps flashing..nothing works..all i have to do is unplug the power cord and plug it back in

the manual says that this thing happens only either if there is blockage air or the speakers are short-circuited.

i m pretty sure that the speakers are not short...hv checked the wires and hv connected them properly...

although there is lot of dust on the system...but the rear fan works fine and the holes arent blocked either.

P.S should i be connecting all the five speakers together fr the HT to work..i m not connecting the surround speakers now as d connecting wires are missing..i m pretty sure as long as the front speakers are connected there shouldnt be a prob right ?

i donn wanna spend money on repairing it so i js thaught some of u guys might know what the problem is and can help me out .

my main aim is to connect the HT to my comp so that i can get 5.1 surround sound.

is there any way in which i can just connect the 5 speakers to the back of my mobo...my mobo supports 5.1 sound..so is it possible that i can just leave the main component aside and just connect the speakers directly to the back of my comp...i knw u hv to need some device to power the speakers and some convertors because the back of my mobo takes only 3.5mm type of connection wheres my speakers hv simple (+)(-) connecting wires..thats it

I m attaching pics of d back of my HT as well as my mobo...

mobo

HT

Thanx...all replies will be appreciated :)

Thanx for the reply.

if i wanted to start from scratch i wouldnt be asking the solution for this problem. :)

So is there a possible way of connecting the speakers to my comp....some convertors or a volume control unit/subwoofer that will possibly accept these kind of inputs and can be connected to my comp ??

or should i go ahead and get the main unit repaired frm some technician..and then connect the whole system to d comp?

i don really have much knowledge abt the various ports..i m attaching a pic of all the connections that are available at the back of the main unit.

So can i do something with the tv/sat ports that i have..i use to conect my tv to ht using these ports and then i could hear the sound thru HT.

can the component/s-video ports help in some way ?

Sorry for my very limited knowledge...please be kind :)

Component video OUT is your best bet to connect this system to TV set, but it'll only do video and from only source built-in DVD drive. So - You could get get 480p out from this output

Regarding TV/SAT - yes, this is audio input, but it's analog and stereo only.
To connect your PC to this "HT" you need 3.5mm to RCA cable like this one:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10218&cs_id=1021804&p_id=665&seq=1&format=2
Connect from GREEN audio port on your pc to TV/SAN IN on "ht"

Again, don't even hope for 5.1. I'm not even sure why you need 5.1 if nothing by front channels are connected as pictured...

i havent connected anything apart from those two front speakers is because wires of the other spekears are missing...and thats the reason why i asked whether all 5 speakers should be connected for the main unit to work...

So basically i think my amp(main unit) is screwd...it doesn stay on..just goes off as soon as i turn it on..no matter whether i hv the speakers connected or not

do u know of an amp/volume control unit that will accept these kinds of inputs and enable me to connect the speakers to my comp ??

Or u think cleaning the main uint can help in some way..possibly ??

I just want my comp to give me 5.1...Sorry i din understand when u said
Again, don't even hope for 5.1
..why is this so...i hv 5 speakers..my mobo can accept 5.1 input...is there something i m missing other than an amp that will do all the coversions ?

FYI : all the five speakers of this system have the same (+)(-) type of connections

Appreciate your time and help.

thanx man !

Ok, regardless of functional condition of your HT, here are few basic things you must know:
If you have only stereo input that means you can not 5.1 whatever you may try.
Now, lets say (I don't it's manual) your HT is capable of converting analog stereo to Dolby Pro logic surround or similar technology. Will you hear sounds from most speakers - yes, probably, but this would be a far cry from real 5.1.

Sony is not typically known for High quality audio component and your system even then was brand new, wasn't something that would amaze me.
In it's design audio quality was largely sacrificed in order to produce cheapest possible 5.1 DVD system.
Even more now - it has some sort of malfunction - Like I said before - just forget about it and start from scratch.

New system doesn't have to cost a million dollars to enjoy quality surround sound, but using refub or used components, Do it yourself or Kit speakers - you could get MUCH better sound even on a very low budget.

The piece of equipment you are asking for is called a receiver.

Your SONY unit is toast. Do not take it in for service. Recycle it.

yes my HT is capable of converting stereo to dolby logic pro II as per the stickers on the front of the main unit..also, i m really dumb, i din realize that my system is actually not 5.1...for it to be 5.1 there should be 6 speakers in all right...i only have 5..including everything...{leaving the receiver aside obviously}
Now my aim is to get sound from all speakers be it stereo or fake 5.1 type..i don mind...FYI : when i connected the speakers to my tv some years back..i use to get sound from all 5 speakers at once even though i was watching SD channels with only stereo sound..and the connections were done using tv/sat ports on the back of my HT

I completely agree with you over the fact that quality sound can be enjoyed even with a very low budget system...but the thing is..i have this system lying on top of my wall unit frm past 2 yrs...nobody cares and nobody in my house will ever use it...from last few days my logitech 2.1 speakers have started giving me problems...so i thaught since i hv something lying unused why not make optimum use of it.

I know spending on a new receiver and then trying to connect and match the current speakers will be kinda foolish...i will better off buying a new set of speakers for my comp straight away...but there is this happiness that i get when i do stuff like " Best out of Waste" :D . If nothing works i atleast learn something new. :)

Thanx again for your reply. Appreciate your time and for being tolerent towards my very limited knowledge on the subject. Let me know the way forward.

Yes, but it doesn't work.

Unless you have the knowledge and equipment to service it, it is a waste of space.

So you either need a new computer sound system, or invest in a new HT system and not HTIB.

Select your speakers and then your receiver.

Please download the user manuals before you purchase anything and make sure you understand them, so we don't get endless help posts to us misery aunts.
