Otherwise, all I can think of would be pricy flagship type stuff from brands like Dynaudio, RBH, Snell, Nola, McIntosh etc.

Looks great! I used to have 2 pairs of traditional loudspeakers with 15" woofers stacked on top of each other.
Now I have 2 Audiosource SW15 subwoofers and acoustech PL-66 bookshelves for mains. I miss those big main speakers.
I have a Mitsu 82" DLP in a 6'2" oak wall unit.

A nice set of large towers would be nice.

I've never built a speaker before, but I've built a computer and I've refinished furniture.

IMO it all depends on what woodworking tools you have. Skill is obtained through experience and bravery but tools.... tools are nessessary.

I would change your decor plans or up your budget 5 or 10 fold.

Not that khz are a form of currency but not everyone uses Seas Excel drivers

I phrased ti badly, I was thinking of completed speakers.

even so the cost of construction and making rigid cabinets that big is considerable.

It will end up being a three way and there are no good cheap midrange drivers.

So the cost will end up considerable even with DIY and will exceed 2 K by quite a margin, if the speaker is any good.

The Zaph would be a contender, but power handling is marginal, even with two, to set against big drivers in a huge speaker. Just enough bandwidth, but would need a notch filter.

The SB unit does not have the required bandwidth.

The infinity is a spare part. Being a planar magnetic integration problems a formidable. I just don't like mating planar magnetic drivers with cone drivers.

For instance I never like the ML hybrids.

This unit is a possible contender, but you would have to use two.

The SEAS excel units are way less then ideal, and really require an active design to use them as midrange. You also have that monstrous 4 kHz break up peak to deal with.

They have good power handling in the low range so with an active design you can get adequate band width. However you still can't get the crossover out of the speech discrimination band.

There really remains a very poor selection of midrange drivers available to the home constructor. The Dynaudio D76 is not available and the ATC mid, the best midrange driver ever made is no longer on the OEM market.

Yes, because if you don't... you'll be missing out on all of the treble...

I know that wasn't constructively adding to the thread, but I just couldn't leave that obvious freudian slip go. Spent too long building speakers when you start abreviating $2,000 as "2 kHz". LOL!

Now back "On Topic" although the budget is pretty tight, and you'd be wanting some beefy amps eventually, but I would highly recommend checking out some Maggies - particularly the 1.7's. Although they are "only" 5.5' tall... they can easily have an extra 6-8" added in stands and there are several aftermarket stands that will add roughly that amount.

Otherwise if you're looking for linesource options... I'd have to say that TLS is right and maybe conservative even for DIY. I think picking speakers by height is ludicrous, so maybe I'm not the best responder... but if it's simply a case of listening position height... why not just get some regular towers and put them on some short stands. It would get you close and give you many more options within your intended budget.
