To nip ADT guy in the bud with his spec sheet cut n pastes, some of the specs may be better on some amps then a Bryston but the Bryston specs are well beyond the point of being inaudable.
I have always loved Bryston!!!

I don't recall ever saying anything negative about Bryston.

I recall saying everything positive about Bryston.

I would be happy to own any Bryston.

If I were rich, I would get those 1,000 watts Bryston monoblocks!!!:D

The ONLY reason I don't have Bryston amps and pre-pros is because I cannot afford them.

Was thinking of doing some focal bookshelves that I really liked for the rears on stands.
I would also do matching PSB surrounds.

I know that surrounds don't get all the info as the front main 3 speakers + LFE, but it's such a nice system and I think you might as well match the aesthetics.

I dunno... if I'm paying 800 for one... and 5000 for the other... and they perform the same... then I think I'd rather just get the 800 dollar one and buy it five times over.
And buy five times over you would, because you would not get your money back.

On a side note, the Bryston doesn't even have to be new.

I have been down the road of buying "value priced" gear. It's like paying to look at a stripper. When it's time to go home, she ain't giving the money back.

As I have mentioned in many threads, you can buy this type of gear used, keep it for as long as you want, and usually get 100%+ of your money back.

Thats your preference. Financially, if that were to happen, you'd be better off buying something once then risk inflation 5 times etc over the 20 years. ;) Besides, its a real pain in the *** to dispose off..environmental charges..yada yada yada, not mention a real pain in the arse to disconnect and reconnect. :)

For a two channel configuration there is the Onkyo M-5000R Power Amplifier which is $475 dollars cheaper than a Bryston 2B SST2 and also less capable than Bryston as well.

I find that statement particularly odd and with zero merit. How much do you lose on an amp you never sell?

I have NEVER had to buy an amp twice. My first purchase in 1987 when I was 15/16 is still running strong.

How often are amps actually crapping out on people. 1 in 100, a 1000?

I agree with used. That changes the conversation a bit. Both my Adcom and Parasound are used.

I would love to see the math behind the assumption. If is an awefully loaded statement.

It was a reply to the GranteedEV post below. I didn't make the statement.

Being in this hobby, I buy and sell all the time. Thinking about selling the pre I just purchased.

Being an Adcom owner, I wouldn't buy another one. 100% sure I can't get my money back either.

Would you like my 7605 for $800?

Let me just clarify. I'm not saying I would buy something with poor build quality here. Just saying that warranties are IME nice to have but not worth four to five times the cost of admission alone.

Confused: You didn't type out the above statement?

I think I could get my $$ back out of my Adcom. The guy that probably bought it new for $1200 sure didn't:D

As a reply to the buying five times statement.

GranteedEV stated he would buy an $800 unit five times.

I am saying that is five times of throwing money away. Pretty simple common sense reply that shouldn't need this much explanation.

I think I could get my $$ back out of my Adcom.
Think is the keyword.

Which is why I am clearly stating used. Here, there, everywhere.;)

I know I can get my money back from my Denon POA-2200.

I don't think I can get my money back out of my Adcom. And I got a smoking deal on it.

It's the interwebs and sometimes meaning is lost. I took it as you were maintaining that if you purchase an $800 amp vs a $4000 amp that you would indeed end up buying it 5 times over....

That $800 wouldn't get you an amp that would be sonically great and last you 10/15/20 years.

LOL, you're just pissed that you didn't talk them down enough on the Adcom:p

You old thread derailers, you. :D

Ok, I've got an uncle who is a master wood worker who said he would happily build me a couple of really nice finished subwoofer enclosures. Neither him or I know anything about building one from scratch but he's got a bunch of sheets of some really high quality walnut HDF he wants to put a gloss finish on. Any tips on what kind of driver, porting, and volume I should go with if I do one in the front left corner, and another on the left, and a little ways behind the sitting area? Thoughts on downfiring? 8 cu feet. for 15" LMS-R 15?

I watched a youtube video of that LMS-5400, actually wrinkling the body panels of the SUV it was in the back of... I'm looking for some good room pressurization/impact and something that can go low enough for any movie soundtrack... but not something that's just rediculously out of balance with the rest of my system. My main reason for wanting to go with two isn't so much for an increase an output, but for even room coverage. I want to avoid like the plague, a one tone droning subwoofer as I'd like to use something of a quality to compliment but not offend the rest of the system.

DIYCable.com is that one sub amp he shows there junk? Never heard of it before.

I'm also still looking for some more suggestions on reasonably priced, reliable, high quality amplification, and pre-processing for the PSB Synchrony 1s, one pair of Synchrony One Bs, and one Synchrony one C. I'm almost done :) Help me wrap this up, and I'll have some pics shortly after I move in... April 9th is close date.

I would get the 18" Maelstrom over the 15" LMS. Go 8 cubic foot sealed. I have always prefered the sound of a front firing sub. I am assuming that the 18" are in your budget. It has a lot more displacement.

If you are referring to the Face Audio Amps. Those things are tanks. What city do you live in? We can take a look on Craigslist for used amplification that will get you more bang for your $$.

Far as the box for the sub woofer you would need 24X24X24 internal dimensions for 8 cubic feet. I would do 45's on the corners and dado out the side/top/bottom panels 3/4 to 1 inch in (so you will have a recessed back).

Another dado 1/4 way in for window brace, another dado 3/4 of the way in for a 2nd window brace and a dado at the front where the baffle will attach with a final window brace (any overhang here will be trimmed with a flush bearing guide router bit.

Use 1 1/8 thick MDF for the front baffle and use t-nuts on interior of the baffle to thread bolts through.

Get Nuetrik's for the wiring connection on the back of the sub's.
