I have an Onkyo 608 receiver and a LG 47LD650 connected with HDMI. There is no HDMI out on the tv, only a toslink(?) out. So, I have the cable box (AT&T Uverse), and the Blu Ray (Sony BDP s570) connected to the Onkyo. Then HDMI from the receiver to the tv.

My problem is with a severe lip sync issue. It seems to be with only one channel. A local CBS channel. But, now that I am aware of it, I'm looking for it on other channels and have noticed it, but not nearly as bad as with the CBS channel. I'm a little weary of changing the settings in the receiver, because I don't know if I could get it back to where it is now if I some how make it worse.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, there is no alternative to adjusting the settings on the receiver, as the developers neglected to syncronize the audio and video when figuring out all of the new digital audio and video. Look at page 47 of your manual:

If you are concerned about resetting things as they are now, write down what the settings currently are, and then start adjusting. With the current settings written down, you can readjust them back if you make matters worse.

My guess is that if neither you nor anyone else has ever set this, it will be with no delay, or a setting of "0".

You might also find a modest delay that works well for most channels might be enough for that one to not be too bad, and not too much for things that are not out of sync, but obviously I cannot promise that you will be so lucky.

I meant wary, not weary. Anyway, thanks for the help. The setting was '0', even I could get back that. The sync could be set to 200, I opted for the middle at 100. Also the HDMI auto sync was disabled and I enabled that. The sync issue is most noticeable when watching the evening local news. I'll check the setting then and see if it needs more tweaking.

Thanks.

Don't be wary, because there is only one real adjustment to make, which of course is the delay.

If it's only one channel, you know, that's not so bad in the grand scheme of things. Some shows, even some movies, have really bad sync. They should all be on the dot perfect to a standard, but some SMPTE engineers perform less admirably than others.

If the lip sync on CBS is completely unacceptable, and this idea IS a hassle/nuisance, but you could try a new set of connections only for this channel, with its own delay setting in the receiver. For example, component from STB directly to tv, and a SPDIF from STB to receiver.

While I'm at it, may I also recommend trying OTA for free. It will look better than any cable signal, and it's free. A decent antenna can be had for $30, then just connect it directly to TV's ATSC tuner with a video coax cable. Use this resource to find your signals with respective strengths:

Had to try

I'm a little intimidated by electronics. Had there been a need to build a cabinet, no problem, as far as internal workings, not so much. I expect them to work and sound I was want them to out of the box. I had been in the menu of this receiver before with out ruining it. I took the plunge and got in there and changed a few settings. Still may need some tweaking, but it has been better.

I have been considering an antenna. I'll go look this weekend.

Thanks for the help!

Sure thing, check out Target for an antenna. I had a friend buy a couple/few, I think including from Radio Shack, Best Buy, maybe even amazon, and I think he said he found the best value at Target for $30 or so.

For syncing up the TV, start recording different things if you have a DVR. Pay attention for any scene where there is a drum strike, or anything like the "clapperboard" test. It's much harder to line up lip sync, but lining up a percussive strike with the visual is much easier.
