Hello, since the PS3 doesnt play DD True HD or DTS HD formats, will it still run a 7.1 system properly? Or only 5.1 properly?

Thanks!

The PS3 does play True HD and DTS-MA I assume you own a Fat model it decodes the formats then sends it PCM to the receiver and it appears as MultiChannel on the display. On the XBM you would go the Audio Setup and you have two choices either to set it automatic or manual if you chose auto the PS3 scans your receiver to determine what it can handle an sets the output accordingly.

Actually i have the slim, 250GB version. I am connected via Optical cable. Does this make a difference? My receiver always says regular Dolby Digital or regular DTS. Never MA or True HD. And my receiver is capable of doing it.

Any help is appreciated.

That's because you are using optical cables. You need to be using hdmi.

Use HDMI and set your output to bitstream if your receiver has all the built in decoders, otherwise leave it as PCM and the PS3 will do the decoding internally.
