Hey guys,
just joined the forum after looking around for the last couple months, now heres my situation I love HT's and after saving some money for the last year I've finally invested in getting my own so here is what I got.
1)Denon 3311ci receiver
2)Klipsch rf62 towers
3)klipsch rc52 centre
4)Klipsch rs42 surrounds
5)Klipsch rw-10d sub
6)monster hd power centre 1800
Ive worked so many saturdays and extra hours and its finally paid so I wanna try and get this right with your advice or at least get in the right direction.
I havent hooked anything up as I've been getting home from work late all week, but with the weekend finally here Im going get the chance to set it up.
I know the receiver brings that easy mic set up but after lurking around the website for awhile i would rather have your professional advice, so here are my question
1) what gauge speaker wire should I use? each front tower is about 6 feet away from the receiver, and the surrounds are about 15 away, does It matter the brand? the local bestbuy carries Monster Xp speaker wire is that ok? or am i just buying the name brand.
2)what should my crossover be set to for the towers, centre, surround and sub fullband 80,90,100 etc.....
3)speaker size all large or all small?
4)sub woofer setup Lfe+main or just lfe?
5)how about the setup on the subwoofer its self, Phase 180 or less? the low pass filtre 120hz or less or off and set it in lfe mode?
6)do banana plugs degrade sound quality or is it not worth getting banana plugs they are pretty expensive best buy sells monster banana plugs 28.99 for 2 pairs I find that very expensive.
7)and the last question is about the front towers should I just run a single speaker wire to each tower or remove the metal clips and run 2 wires for each tower? bi-amp i believe its called

thanks in advance for taking the time to read my post and answering some of my question its really appreciated. cant wait to post pics when Im done.
again thanks!!

Cheers
Nuno

1. Buy either Monoprice or Blue Jeans Cable speaker wire. Do not buy Monster, ever, or we will come at you with pitchforks and torches! You'll probably be just fine with even 16 AWG, but since it's so affordable to buy thicker from the above two, might as well. Here is a guide:
http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm#wiretable

2. Try 80hz for every speaker. The towers may or may not sound better (depending on what it can do, and what you're asking of it), with something like 60hz; I would use your ears. Surrounds, if they are tiny they may be better off with higher. Sorry that I'm not answering the question, but my easy advice is to go 80 everywhere, and tweak if you prefer later.

3. Small. If it was large, then you can't set the xovers from #2 above.

4. Well, assuming "small" then there will be rerouted bass to sub. I don't know if the LFE+main means that is like some "double bass" setting, but my preference then would be LFE only?

5. [strike]Play bass heavy music, and do both switches to see which sounds fuller[/strike]. Oh nm, if you use the Audyssey in the Denon, it will get your phase just right, and not either a crude 0 or 180.

6. No degradation, and it will help so that the speaker ends don't corrode. Don't buy Monster. If willing to spend a bit, I do like locking banana plugs, for more peace of mind. I don't use this brand, but I might suggest the popular GLS brand. Otherwise, bare wire is fine, just make sure to twist, and no strays!

7. Single speaker wire will be just fine.

hey there is no need for torches and pitch forks lol! thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, now that I read your answers I have a couple more questions.
1)isnt crossover supposed to be set based on the speakers you have? i mean shouldnt it be different for every speaker? plus what are you listening for when adjusting the crossover the more clearer the better? should the volume be loud when adjusting by ear?
2)now there are adjustments that the built in amp on the sub has phase and low pass filtre and the lfe mode if i have the receiver set to lfe should i set the sub to lfe? i ask this because if i set it on the receiver i still have to go to the sub and adjust the low pass filtre so should they both be set to lfe?
3)I wanted to buy the speaker wire today and i have no idea were to buy blue jean or monoprice cable. any recommendations for big box store brands.
I bought my receiver at small high end audio store here in Toronto(canada) called Bay Bloor Radio they have speaker wire im not sure the brands but its all super expensive they had wire there at almost 6bucks per foot im sure its great wire but i cant spend that kind of money on speaker wire.

once again thanks for the advice

depends on whether or not your receiver is capable of crossing over at multiple frequencies, see, IMO, if you're going to use a sub 80hz is the perfect crossover point for most two way speakers because this essentially gives you a three way. the only time i would recommend using a lower crossover point is if your speakers are already 3-way and the woofers have a crossover point lower then 300hz, for example the EMP impression towers have woofers that are crossed over at 150hz and are capable down to 50hz i would probably cross them over at 60hz. your issue is the only bass capable speakers out of the speakers you got are the RF 62's. the RF 42's and the RC 52 won't make it past 70hz. If you can free up your speakers woofer to concentrate on mid-bass and midrange you will get much cleaner and clearer sound from them then if they have to also try to cover the bass octaves. as far as speaker wire goes, speaker wire is just speaker wire, the only thing that matters is that it is oxygen free (which nearly all of it is) and that it is a decent gauge, 16 gauge is good for most applications. monoprice is purchased on monoprice.com. i highly recommend monoprice, they have great cables, extremely low prices, and speedy shipping.

There are a number of articles on it, but Monster Cable gives you no improvement over other cable. I would typically run 14 gauge, but you can likely run 16 gauge or thicker (14, 12, 10, etc.) if it makes you feel better about things. 100' is about 30 bucks plus shipping here:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10239

2)what should my crossover be set to for the towers, centre, surround and sub fullband 80,90,100 etc.....
Does the Denon offer crossover settings for the towers? I think it is usually just 'small' or 'large' on the main speakers. The only use of a crossover is to determine the frequency that the subwoofer starts taking over for the main speakers and where the rolloff occurs. It is not typically done 'per speaker', but if this option is there, I would leave it at about 80hz as the subwoofer rolloff level.

3)speaker size all large or all small?
Small typically with properly matched speakers. Unless you have subwoofers in your speakers, then the low frequencies need to be handled by the subwoofer.

4)sub woofer setup Lfe+main or just lfe?
LFE+Main will allow the sub to handle all the low frequencies in your system and this is exactly what you want. LFE is ONLY the information that is on the LFE channel of the audio. This means that any low frequencies sent to the main speakers would be lost, and this is NOT what you want.

5)how about the setup on the subwoofer its self, Phase 180 or less? the low pass filtre 120hz or less or off and set it in lfe mode?
Set it to 0 and then run the auto-setup on the Denon, it'll handle that.

6)do banana plugs degrade sound quality or is it not worth getting banana plugs they are pretty expensive best buy sells monster banana plugs 28.99 for 2 pairs I find that very expensive.
Once again with the Monster machine.

How about these?

http://cgi.ebay.com/24-Nakamichi-Speaker-banana-plug-connector-24K-015384-/180623500470?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0dffe4b6

They double clamp the speaker wire so it doesn't fall out (ever) and the plastic cover helps to prevent shorts. Under 20 bucks and you are more than covered on what you need. You'll have a few left over to give to a friend in need.

7)and the last question is about the front towers should I just run a single speaker wire to each tower or remove the metal clips and run 2 wires for each tower? bi-amp i believe its called
Bi-amp is TWO AMPS running things. What you are talking about is bi-wiring. Or, as some prefer to call it BUY-wiring. It's a waste of money to run more wires and produces zero sonic improvement to your system.

1)isnt crossover supposed to be set based on the speakers you have? i mean shouldnt it be different for every speaker? plus what are you listening for when adjusting the crossover the more clearer the better? should the volume be loud when adjusting by ear?
You typically don't adjust by ear. The crossover is the point at which you want to remove bass from the speakers which can't handle them (all of yours) to the speaker which can handle it (the subwoofer). With properly matched speakers, this point of 'crossover' is going to be the same on all speakers. You want it the same because it helps to match the sound coming from all the speakers. So, instead of a couple of speakers reaching a bit lower than others, you get very similar sound from every speaker in the room.

Set the subwoofer to LFE and set the crossover on the subwoofer high - 120hz, or 160hz or whatever it's highest setting is. Basically you are telling the subwoofer to accept whatever signal is coming into it and the place to look for that signal is on the LFE input. This is correct since the Denon will be what is handling the bass for the subwoofer.

No, it's wire. It is NOT great wire! It's NORMAL wire and it's overpriced by $5.70 a foot!

You can pick up cheap speaker wire quite often from your local hardware store. They typically have speaker wire (at least in the US, Home Depot and Lowes carries speaker wire), but even THAT is expensive. Going online to buy cable gives you quality cable for far less than stores will be selling it for, and it's unfortunate that you didn't ask these questions a week or so ago because you could have ordered and had the stuff already. At this point, you are just going to end up wasting money to have it right now.

Not that I don't understand that eagerness to get things setup. It's pretty darn exciting to have new gear.

This advice is greatly appreciated, as for the crossover adjustment on the towers I can adjust the crossover on them even with the speakers set to small, I ran the denon setup it sounds fine but it is nothing like the settings that were talking about, here are the settings the denon mic gave me.
front -large
centre-small
sub- yes
surround- small
Crossover points
fronts-40hz
centre-60hz
surrounds-80hz
subwoofer was lfe+main
crossover for sub was 80hz
So I tried your setup I put everything at 80hz and wow I thought it sounded good before it sounds GREAT!! now, Im just have a little to much bass I find bass over powers a bit to much should set the volume lower or mess with its settings?
for speaker wire i just bought some 16gauge for the rears and 12 gauge for the front and centre i bought the cables at the local homedepot rca is the brand, i still have to buy banana plugs ill probably pick some up later,
For some reason I though that I would get more punch from the towers but no the speakers barely move (I know I cant look at it the way so please no one jump on me for that comment).
Just so I understand I should set the phase to zero, on the subwoofer control set it to lfe mode then on my denon setting set it 120hz or 160hz is that correct?
thanks again
Nuno

1)You set your speakers to small Check

2)Crossover set at 80Hz Check

3)LFE+Mains Check

Set the LFP of the LFE to 120Hz

If you feel that your bass is coming in to hot you can lower the volume till it sounds pleasing to your ear. I have one question did you do the Sub crawl? Normally you would leave the phase at 0 unless your sub is out phase with your mains but it sound like it all right since the bass is a bit overpowering for your taste.

You can adjust the channel level separately. Look on the main remote for a button labeled 'Ch Level' at the upper right of the Right/Left/Up/Down/Enter buttons. Press this and you don't need to use the test tone, just listen for the bass level to suit you.

It's where you would place your sub at the main listening position and crawl around the room listening where the bass sounds just right not to boomy and not lean and that's where you will want to place your sub.

Sorry I had to research your question, from what I have found there's a wireless media bridge like this from Tigerdirect it should work with a wireless modem assuming yours is.

For your cable needs Monoprice is a good way to go, for a surge protector there are several good companies and Monster isn't one of them. In this hobby your never done just temporarily on hold till the next upgrade.
