HELP: Noise in Fantasia 2000 during Pines of Rome???

I need some help... what is that noise/instrument in Fantasia 2000, Pines of Rome in the beginning of the song when the whales come out of the water and then it goes underwater with bubbles (~6 minutes into the DVD)? It comes again at briefly throughout the song. Sounds like a snare or a horn but it sounds really distorted making me thing something is wrong with my speakers... but I'm not having any trouble with any other BR/DVD/CD, only this one song. It was bothering so much I switched to the DVD and hear the same sound. Kinda like a rattling as if the woofer was broken... but it sounds like it's coming from the tweeter when I get closer. Is this how it's supposed to sound? It's really bugging me if someone can clue me in I'd be really grateful. Thanks!

I checked out the dvd on another rig and heard the same noise/instrument... just not as clear and pronounced.. wondering if the ultra2 speakers were just more revealing? Or is it that the systems are not good enough to make that section sound good? If one of you guys get a chance to check out the dvd or bluray id appreciate it.. thanks!

I saw this in IMAX on opening day 1/1/2000. I've also watched this at least 20 times on DVD, maybe twice on BD. It is part of the track.

One small thing that I found odd - on my BD65 there is a xylophone sound as you move through the menu selections and on my Oppo there is not.

Any idea of what instrument this is? Is it distorted or is it just me? =D My wife thinks I'm crazy, thanks for your help!

You're making me want to watch this again for the first time since I don't know when.

Here is the instrumentation, according to wiki. As you can see there IS a snare drum. What is confusing about your confusion is that you cannot distinguish whether it is a percussion or horn instrument. Perhaps it's the ratchet? Please note there calls for a gramophone in the instrumentation!

If a horn, I would likely suspect some sort of funkier mute being used, with the performer perhaps aggressively doing something with it. I will link a YouTube, and if you can say the exact time in there, maybe someone can help you. I'll try but you have no idea just how awful my stock computer speakers are . . .
Woodwinds: a piccolo (doubling flute 3), 2 flutes, 2 oboes, an english horn, 2 clarinets in B-flat and A, a bass clarinet in B-flat and A, 2 bassoons and a contrabassoon

Brass: 4 horns in F and E, 3 trumpets in B-flat, 3 tenor trombones, a bass trombone, 6 Buccine in B-flat (played on flugel or saxhorns as follows: 2 Soprano, 2 Tenor, 2 Bass) and an offstage trumpet in C

Percussion: timpani, a bass drum, a snare drum, cymbals, 2 small cymbals, a tam-tam, a triangle, a ratchet, a tambourine and a glockenspiel

Keyboards: an organ, a piano and a celesta

Electronics: a gramophone (Il Canto dell’usignolo)

Strings: a harp, first and second violins, violas, violoncellos and double basses.

Thanks for the thorough response! I'm at work so my computer speakers are not very revealing either. I honestly can't hear it right now... but I know the sound comes in at 25 seconds when the whales come out of the water. I'll go home and watch it again and post mutiple locations so that you guys have a better idea.

Through mega freaking crappy speakers it sounds like a snare to me. There may or may not be a ratchet and/or a tambourine phased into the percussion section as well during that passage, from what I can barely make out, but it sounds like a snare to start with for sure, to me.

I forgot to address that it can and often does sound like the tweeter when you get closer because that is producing the higher harmonics that allow you to distinguish what instrument might be in use at any given moment. Without the higher harmonics, all instruments would sound the same, and it's what allows us to differentiate an oboe from a violin when both are playing the same pitch.

Thanks for the help, I agree it does sound like a snare... I'm just wondering why it sounds so distorted (or is that what it's supposed to sound like? o_O). Here are the specific times the sound is heard:

0:25 to 0:37
1:21 to 1:24
1:27 to 1:28

You almost got the best of my curiosity, when I thought about ordering myself a BD, but it's rather pricey, so not yet.

Maybe with the particular levels for the particular frequencies being created, there is some sort of perfect storm in your system, perhaps highlighting a weakness of the room, weakness of listener/speaker positions, and/or perhaps weakness of the speaker. Or perhaps your driver(s) is damaged, maybe something like gap rub (which I've never heard so far as I know). Do you have a penchant for cranking the living hell out of your system? Is your tweeter blown?

Sorry I can't help more!

I once had an issue too, with some LF sweeps from a test disc creating a very audible buzz. I found the culprit. The speaker wire was touching the speaker.

Lol Thanks for the help. To answer your question, I listen to music/watch movies at a comfortable level. I doubt the tweeter is blown because I have not had any problems with any other CD/DVD/Bluray. I first encountered it in the bluray, but when I checked it's also apparent in the DVD version. I heard it with my Klipsch Ultra2 speakers and then confirmed it (to a lesser extent) on an older Infinity Kappa7 system as well. It's interesting that it's not noticeable at all on my computer speakers, and barely noticeable on my apple headphones. With all that, I'm going to chalk it up to the material being distorted. Thanks again for spending the time to investigate this weird occurance with me... I was hoping other members would comment and say "HEY I heard that too!" (I think J-Garcia said he heard it, and that he thinks it is part of the original track) but maybe my wife is right (and I'm crazy)
