I finally got around to doing some EQ'ing a couple of weekends ago. It made quite a difference. I used the Rives test disc and found out that I had some HUGE dips in the midrange. Unfortunately the UMC-1 didn't have EQ points at some of the bad spots, but it did have some that were fairly close. I was able to get my curve quite a bit closer to flat and it made a very noticeable difference. It was like there had been a blanket placed over my speakers before and now it had been lifted away. I kept going back and forth from no EQ to my new curve with lots of different music, rock, jazz, techno, dance and I always went back to the new curve.
More surprising to me was how much better the bass sounded. I'm not sure why, but I guess some of the peaks or troughs that I was able to smooth out must have been interfering with the bass frequencies. Unfortunately I was only able to EQ the FL and FR speakers because the Rives disc only has tones in 2ch. I want to do the surrounds and especially the center as well. I don't know of a test disc that outputs tones across the full spectrum individually to all 5 channels of a HT set up. I guess what I will do is connect my center to the FL or FR channel of my amp and EQ it separately. It should work that way.
