Well I got rid of all my other bad components. Was not able to listen to any music.

Bought an Onkyo TS -SR608. Hooked them up. Not sure on the polarity but will check tonight.

The system just sounded aweful.

I think it may be the sub par speakers. Alright the BAD speakers. They are the White Van speakers everyone talks about. Bought them at a pawn shop several years ago.

What would be a good starting speaker to match with my new reciever to start building a quality entry level system.

Big room with high ceilings.

Thanks. and your welcome for the laugh.

Budget

I think $6-7 hundred for the speakers. 2

I can also envision a subwoofer.

18' * 18' with a cathedral ceiling. Hardwood floor.

At this point no HT mostly 100% music. Friends have told me this will change. lol

Energy RC-30 for STEAL of the price 200/each - they used to sold 3 times this price....
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/reviews/542220550/energy-rc30
Sub:
* Lava LSP12 - $338.46 Shipped

* eD A3S - 250 - $350 Shipped (Built-to-order - 1-2 months delay), but it's still great sub

But the Best value is:
Dayton Audio C1500K 15" Powered Subwoofer Kit - $319.80 + Shipping (about $40) - It'll take about hour to assemble - very easy project. Unfortunately PE is out of the stock for now on this kit.

Speaker Ohm

Are there any concerns about Ohm rating of the receiver and the Ohm rating of the speaker?

RC-30 Sensitivity: 89dB (anechoic)-92dB in Room and Nominal Impedance of 8Ohm - minimal 4 Ohm.
For your 608 you'd deep reach into ear hearing shattering volumes levels before impedance could become a problem :cool:
Unfortunately TX-SR608 don't have pre-outs (other than sub) so external amp is not possible for your AVR.

Bear in mind RC-30 are rear ported so you'd need to position them 1-2ft from walls. If thats an issue for you - option b) is Infinity Primus p362 towers, but AHers like RC-30 much better

What would you recommend for a preamp?
In your current room you don't need to add pre-amp and/or amp.
Onkyo TX-SR608 is a very solid AVR and have more than enough power to drive these speaker to very loud levels.
If you decide to use speaker in MUCH MUCH bigger space, you could just change AVR with pre-outs and add amp

Going dedicated pre-pro is a costly proposition, and using AVR for pre-pro is typically much cheaper, while not sacrificing much (if any) of SQ...
If I would need to pick AVR for pre-pro duty - I think Yammi RX-A700 would be good choice (or A800 if you need video scaling features) add Emotiva XPA-3 and you could squeeze out every bit of potential out of RC-30 and if later on added Energy RC-LCR center speaker.

What would you recommend for a preamp?
There are no preamp out puts on this receiver so you'll use the avr's amps. I have this receiver and a pair of PSB Alpha B1's which the 608 powers really well. A step up would be the PSB Image B4, which I would recommend. If I didn't need tower speakers, I would be getting the B4's.
