Time to buy a gun ... again

finally got the revolver for the wife. there had been a miscommunication as to the barrel length, but i'm secretly happy. (we thought we were getting a 4"er)

i tried it yesterday. the ball (or cylinders) or whatever the bullet thingy is called would sometimes NOT spin

i mean, i could not finish the 7 bullets without un-sticking it. i called the gun store, they said i should bring it in (and all the BS i have to go through like getting permits to transport it)

it seems like the back of the bullet gets stuck at the back of the gun which sticks the cylinder. i have to forcefully push the cylinder out (and you can see that bullet have scratches at the back)

i was cleaning the stains last night for picture taking with WD40, and i tried with empty shells, it didn't get stuck anymore (it's not super smooth though) i think it's a misaligned cylinder like the upper part is closer to the back than the bottom. but why did it get smoother with the cleaning? i'm gonna try again today ... should i blast the moving parts with WD40? (there is some original oil in there)

p.s. it makes the 9mm recoil seem like a pea shooter, the bang it makes is now a BOOM instead of bang and it doesn't jump as much because i like the grouping i made (i get better every time) but it DOES hurt the meaty part of the hand at the bottom of the thumb.

There may have been some dirt or something in the chambers that kept the cases from seating properly. A good cleaning is always recommended even on a new gun. Use a brush on the bore and on each chamber. If you are using WD 40 make darn sure you get it all out before shooting. Otherwise your gun will get dirty very quickly.

tried it again last night, got stuck again on that last bullet. took note of the chamber that got stuck this time.

how accurate does one have to be in terms of grouping and distance to be effective?

when you say grouping, we're talking diameter right and not radius to bullseye?

I've taken several tactical classes. You can be certain that just about any in-home engagement is going to be within 25ft or less. It just works out that way... how many long open spans do you have in your house... not many.

Aiming to the target is important to learn, but so is directional shooting. You should also practice taking the gun, getting to grip, then pushing out to the target and shooting without careful aiming. You need to get used to being able to be effective at getting the gun pointed to where you need it without taking the time to line up sights... in a panic or otherwise intense situation, you're just not going to have that time sit there and aim on a stationary target. I used to do a lot of point and shoot drills off the bench at 5 yrd line. You want to go for the center mass of the target. Forget about the head shot and stuff like that. Get used to grabbing your gun, pointing and shooting and hitting center mass. That's the kind of stuff that saves you and your family.

Don't get me wrong... everything else is important to. You should be comfortable and effective at a wide range of techniques. For a home defense gun, a laser sight is a very effective tool. It doesn't work for me because I have severe colorblindness towards red, but it's a very good thing to have.

I have never looked into it but does anybody offer another color laser? seems like green would be easy to do.

Green lasers are slowly becoming more readily available. There are several decent companies out there making them. However, when I think about laser sights on a handgun, Crimson Trace has the hot setup. Their laser is integrated into the grip and is pressure activited. It's a great setup. I'd have it on every handgun I own if I could just see the dang red dot!

Also on the horizon are blue lasers. I've seen a couple built from... oddly enough... blu-ray players. It's not just the laser part that's needed but the durablility to handle the shock and recoil. I've seen a blue laser pointer and it's completely the most awesom-ist thing. Even with my colorblindness and crappy eyesight, I can see it from across the a very long hallway. it'll probably be a few years before they become available and affordable for the firearms market.
