Down firing sub in crawl space?

So for all purposes consider me to be new to home theater. I am moving in to a new place in which my living room/home theater room is right above a crawl space area. The crawl space has a dirt ground and is about 3'5" high. My question is whether or not I could get away with place my downwardfiring 8" Boston Acoustic driver in the crawl space and get decent response. It is not insulated and would be really nice asthetically, but would I lose all quality? Also, being that it would be firing into earth, would it be best to maybe place it on a hard surface and place it on it's side? I'm sure these may seem like dumb questions, but any advisement would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unless you cut holes into the floor, I believe you won't get any response at all. Plus, your sub will be exposed to the elements and may not last long in large temperature swings and dirt. Your best bet is to just leave it in the room (possibly under an end table?). If you can't fit the sub inside the room, you may want to look into Infinite Baffle design. Good Luck.

Are you talking about under a trailer park home setup? I don't think that would be a good placement at all.

Even with holes, as was suggested, an 8" is just not up to task for much.
If looks is important and noise transmission outside of the crawl space is not an issue with neighbors, I would suggest you look into and research an infinite baffle sub setup but this too would need some opening like a heating duct would do.
