Can I connect my external HD to my yamaha RX-v667?

My husband has been moving our music from CD to an external HD in the hopes that I can figure out how to connect it to our new Yamaha RX-V667. He's been using MediaMonkey to do the copying and if I move the HD from one computer to another the music is there and plays OK. Since this works, he believes that I can figure out how to connect it to the receiver because the receiver has a USB port in front. The user manual only mentions the port in relation to gaming. I don't want to 'just plug it in' for fear of blowing the HD or receive up :)

He has great faith in me since I'm the geek and I put our home theater together. I don't want to let him down, please help.
thanks,
Clare

Clare,

There are several ways to do this, most involving a media player or server. On the inexpensive end this would do quite well:

Western Digital WD TV Live Plus HD Media Player

A search on this forum, Amazon, or Google for "media players" will provide other options. The advantage of a media player, over just a direct connect using the USB, is the ability to browse your music collection on your TV with album art, by genre, album, artist--too cool!

There are some very high-end options like Olive on the other end of the $$ spectrum.

The key is to find a player with adequate sound quality, easy to use/navigate software, and a reasonable cost for your purpose (casual listening, critical listening, background music, etc.).

Cheers,

Please, please keep your husband away from the front of the receiver with any USB devices. That's a HDMI port, NOT a USB port. The best way to get music streaming from your HDD to the receiver would be one of the media server devices mentioned above. The device you're looking for is sometimes referred to as a "Media Extender."

thank you both

I'll look into your suggestions.
I've already told hubby to "...back away from the receiver, far, far away"
:D

For driving A3 as a USB device, the USB port should be powered.
You can connect your A3 to your TV via Composit/Component/S-video
If you tell me more about ports on your TV set and your Home Theater, I can help more effictively.
Sorry if my English was poor.

Can you rip Blu-rays to something like this? It'd be cool to have my favorite BD's on a hard drive instead of swapping discs.
Yes. It'll cut down on the load time, too! Here's the website. ASUS also has a similar device. Both need external hard drives.
