The weakest part of my stereo is the Sony 5 disc CDP, it has also started to have problems. I want to replace it with a good (preferably used) 5 disc changer. I only use it as a transport, using digital out to my MC-1. I used to be a fan of Yamaha, but I know they started having someone else make there CDPs, Phillips I think. I am not a fan of Phillips. I am not sure how far back I would have to go to get a CDP actually made by Yamaha and I don't want a real old one that will break down soon.

I like the 5 disc carousel design, convenient to throw in 5 discs and enjoy music for a while. What would you recommend?

Thanks,
Brad

Marantz. Old Nakamichi if you can find one...

OR: Just buy any decent player and use an external DAC, thus using the player/changer only as a transport, and bypassing its own, cheap DACs. I use an old NAD cd/dvd changer with a $100 external DAC (Super Pro 707), and the combo sounds like a $800 CD player to me.

Marantz = No. They were owned by Phillips prior to D&M Holdings and they did, and as far as I know still do, provide the basis for their players.

If you can find a decent Sony ES player, I have no problem recommending them. Their normal players were pretty average, but the ES players are decent.

Used Rotel, NAD, etc... would also be good. The current NAD stuff isn't as good IMO, but the older stuff is relatively bulletproof.

I have a Yamaha DVD-C950 5-disc player for sell. It is a much higher level than the one in the above post. It plays almost every type of media (CD, DVD-video, DVD-A, SACD, etc.) with the exception of Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs. Was top of the line when it was new and sold for $500.

I will part with it for $150. The unit is in excellent condition. I can send pictures on request.

If you can find yourself a mint condition Adcom GCD-700 you will be very well rewarded. Very high quality changer, using BB dacs and a Class A topology. It also doesnt need a preamp as you can run it direct into an amp if you so choose via its variable outputs(It also has traditional fixed, and a digital out as well).
