Hi

I am not a tekkie at all and do not understand audio, optical vs HDMI etc, so I need some help please.

I have a PS3, Sky HD, an HDTI and a Blu-ray surround sound system.

I am wanting to set these up so that I can watch sky tv in surround sound, play my PS3 in surround sound and obviously watch blu-ray in surround sound, hopefully without having to disconnect wires each time I switch devices.

My Blu-ray player is Samsung HT-C5500. It has 2 HDMI inputs, one HDMI output, a digital optical input as well.

I have 3 HDMI cables and also an optical cable. But the instruction book does not tell me have to set up the combination of devices I have. So if I want to watch everything in surround sound (depending if the broadcast is in surround sound) they how do I connect these devices with the cables I have, and do I need to do any settings on my TV as well, other then turn the sound down??

Any advice much appreciated and please in layman's terms if at all possible as I just can't get my head around this!!

Many thanks

I'll do my best to help. The manual for your system says that there are no HDMI inputs but I'll take your word they are there.

First I would hook up the two sources you use most to the HT-C5500 via HDMI. That will allow video and audio to be sent there. Then attach the HDMI out of the 5500 to the TV. So you now have audio and video for two sources working.

The last source is going to be a little more complicated:

The easiest way to connect the last source would be via HDMI to the TV. Then run an optical cable out of the TV, if it has an optical out, to the 5500 optical in. You're done. You will have to switch the input on your TV to watch this source.

If the source doesn't have an HDMI out then you can try this:

You have an optical cable so if this last source has an "optical out" then connect the cable from there to the "optical in" on the 5500. That takes care of the sound. The video is going to have to be passed to the TV directly by some means. So that depends on what video outputs you have on the back of that source. Some examples are Component, Composite, S-Video. Find a cable to connect one of those to one of the inputs on the TV. This now means that video is setup. You will have to change the input on the TV to watch this source now.

I hope that helps.

Many thanks for the replies. It definitely does have 2 HDMI inputs. I only have the PS3 & SKY HD to attach to the Home cinema, my original post said HDTI whereas I meant to say this was my HDTV, so apologies, I will try the set up as you suggest.

Someone confused me by saying HDMI would not be good enough to use the surround sound as it did not pass decent audio hence I would also need an optical cable, but looks like they were wrong, so I'll try the 3 HDMI cables as you suggest.

Many thanks

I have looked at the manual and there is a section called HDMI audio, which says... "The audio signals transmitted over HDMI Cable can be toggled on/off.
Off - video is transmitted over the HDMI cable only and udio is poutput through the product speakers only
On - both video and audio signals are transmitted over the HDMI connection cable, and audio is output through your TV speakers only

If I am ready that correctly, then if I connect my ps3 & sky hd via HDMI to the home cinema, then from home cinema to TV via HDMI, then select on, then I WONT hear sky of PS3 in surround sound as the sound will only come through the TV speakers, not the surround speakers. Is that correct as that defeats the object of what I am trying to achieve, i.e. having surround sound for all my devices.

If I am correct, looks like I have cocked up with the system I have bought, or can I rectify this at all by using an optical cable anywhere??

thanks

Set the HDMI output to off, then you will get sound from your receiver and not the TV. You can not get sound from the TV and receiver at the same time. This is usual.
