Ok,
We recently just purchased this house and in the front entry there is a open space that is living & dining area, which we really do not use both as you see.

So I am looking to do a closed in some of the area to make a dedicated theater room / media room.

So with that being discussed with the lovely wife and I would like to make something happen. :)

The media room area is about 11'7" x 9'8" (L x W).

I could go back to 13' or 14' to be a little deeper, but am worried that the media-room will take both AC / Heat vents (in the ceiling) and nothing will be on the outside of that area along this space / area. :(

I am debating on which doors I should go with for our media/ theater room.

So I had two area's that I had in mind.

Look at this picture and I would love to hear the feedback on which route would be better / ideal?

Also do you think the sq foot is do-able for a media room??

I plan on maybe going with in wall surround sound and a projector, but maybe I would be happy with a 55" - 60" flat-panel also. :)

What I need to focus on right now is just where to put doors at.

Thanks,

I would go with the bigger room and simply elbow the vent into the wall of the adjoining room, the ceiling looks plenty high enough to build a small soffit to hide the duct. I dont think a compromise in size should be made over the location of a vent. Sliding pocket doors made to todays standards are some what noisy and I feel you would get too much movement from them , especially if you go with subs.
Overall it seems like a good use of space and I think the best place for your door would be the french opening side and your screen on the wall you marked as slider move that wall over some to get more space and worry about the vent after the fact, now that ceiling is another thought all together.I would under fram the same rake as the outside wall back down the the wall that says french doors so that it matched , this would give you an excellent place to run cables from front to back and so on.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

I figure I could add another vent if I do close in the area (along with the two heat/cooling vents).

The only thing is, my wife does not really want to close in the whole area with a wall due to it being such a long ol hallway that would look like "The Golden-Gate bridge" as for the distance, lol.

Total room length (not making a wall) is 20'6" in length. So how long do you think I should go?

Remember, I would like some of the other area to become a front open office also :)

Thanks again,

O forgot to mention, the area up in the attic to this new (room) is fully accessible to get all wires put in (from the attic).

Love this house design way more then my old two story. I really want this to be a clean setup all around. :D

If you are going to do the French doors that wall would not seem "too" long as there would be about a 36" to 48" wide x 6' 10" high break with the doors and trim. I would be sure to leave the inside dimension of that room no less than the twelve foot mark remember to allow for a 4 1/2 inch thick wall and your balance is then the office size, right? The starting point is obviously the corner going into the hall way area existing so the width is set in stone so to speak, HMMM.... thinking. . . I always wished I went longer in the way of dimension from sitting position the screen wall and after the fact its a bit too late...

Here is the whole area of the front living space. As for the extended marking (tape on the ground) towards the front is the front office area. I had to make it wider due to the fact that there are 3- windows in the front living area.

SO here's a pic of the whole area as if you come from the front door:

Need room for dropping wires?

No problem:
:D

that wouldn't be a media room.
it would be a media closet.

imo, you are insane for wanting to box up that room.

just sayin :)

Thanks for your honest opinion, honestly.

So what do you suggest?

Should I just leave it open "as is" and then just make it into a open theater area along with maybe a open bar area?

What I do not like is that this area as you see, everyone can see it (everything) as I open the front door. I don't care for that.

Here is what it used to look like and to me, this is just too PLAINE JANE!! :(

The only thing that is bad is no light control and this area is pretty bright, so with that being said, no projector in this area. So I would probably have to go with a LCD or LED setup instead.

I would like to clear up one thing pertaining to my posts, my advice is surely only in regards to you actually partitioning off the room as I would also be of the general consensus of NOT cutting that large room in half. I always go for the huge family and gathering rooms , not thrilled about boxy cut up small rooms, heck I wish my HT were bigger and it is over 20 x 18 now, I was giving my thoughts under the pretense that you were making two rooms no matter what, do you also have a large Family Room elsewhere in the home?

Sure no problem (sorry about the mess, but I am moving crap around).

So the front has 3-open windows.
It also has a custom seating bench and on the sides (as you see) are two huge bookshelfs. My wife cannot stand it and wants me to rip it out.
I told her to calm down since it is real wood, I can sand it and stain it to a nicer and deeper darker color to match it with our furniture.

The whole area is 20.5' x 14' (L x W)

Here are three pics from looking @ the front area, by the front door.

So if I do-not close in this area, any ideas on a media room / office layout?

Anyone?? :)
Thanks

No that is from one wall to the other, as u see where the rolled up carpet is at on the right side (in the picture). :)

But from wall to the end of the foyer wall is another 5.5' (so from wall to the foyer is right @ 19'6" / by front door.)

Too small to partition. It'll give a cramped, closed-in feeling.

The one wall perpendicular to the hallway is your best bet for your tv. Need a heavy curtain for that one window and the front one. A sectional might give it some separation.

Maybe a ceiling bulhead to demarcate the home theater area.

So you are talking about the wall where the little black shelf on the wall is, correct?

I was thinking maybe a divider (half-wall) from the tv/ media room then the office area where it is by the front living-room windows.

My only issue is I would hate for Dominoes Pizza to ring my doorbell and then as I open the door, they could see in and I would fully expose my crap to the public. I guess I have to say is I hate a front door being exposed to an open area. :( :(

I guess we should consider looking @ buying another home in the future just having a foyer and nothing exposed to anyone as others can see in from the front door. I'm pretty cautious about that. Oh and I am not saying the pizza boy @ Dominoe's Pizza would be a part-time robber. I do have ADT and I do have survaliance camera outside the front door, but you get the idea. :(

ok, here is what "I" would do.

clear out the wall with the 3 windows. make plugs for all windows. put your speakers on that wall. the gear would go under those 3 windows. with the center on top. a tv there if you want, for daily viewing. then mount a electric screen, at least 119", above the windows and about 10" or so out from the wall.

no one will be able to see all of this from the door. unless you let them in.

you could indeed have a very nice setup there. not to say that you cannot have a very nice system in the smaller room you asked about. but bigger rooms (to a point) have a better "feel" to them.

it would lay out like this. but you would make adjustments as needed. that room is 12x19. the screen is on the 12' wall.

sorry for the big blurry pic

I like that idea. I could do black out panels in those windows (to cover over the blinds) and do that. I like the position, but now the sound will carry through the whole living room, down that hallway to our kitchen and then of course the master bedroom. :( I planned to put the system in the other direction (facing towards the front door), that way the audio sound will not go towards rest of our house. Of course, I know I could, but then the whole area would be exposed to the guest / strangers that are at the front door.

A lot of thinking right now, but I honestly like your idea and may have to flow with it.

It was funny because I just starting browsing the new homes and man, they are about $50K-$70K then my house per sq.ft and that is in the same neighborhood with smaller lots and not 4-sided brick. Oh also I am a corner lot!! lol.
I guess I will deal with it. ;)

Thanks for your input. I will progress foward and flow with your idea.

X400 thanks to you "just-some-guy"!!

Gracias!!

Before we moved, this was my old dedicated theater room:

Look at the back as it was a half wall and i closed it in with drop drapes that extracted open or close. Of course this out of the way game room from the rest of the home, and it was upstairs. lol. Live and learn. :)

i use pieces of cardboard cut to fit behind the shades/blinds. free, easy, effective.

idk, how you watch/listen to your movies. but me, it doesn't matter which way the speakers face. the sound is everywhere. and if you put it on the other wall, you will narrow your stage and limit the size of screen.

but, as i said. you have to do what you want.

Your idea is GREAT!

I plan to go forward with it!! :)

What I will do is take down that whole storage cabinet area, except the one on the left side, as I would us it to put all my audio equipment in it. I will sand down the wood and make it deeper / darker color to fit my HT equipment.

:)

Time to go PJ shopping. lol!!
