Looking for a New Subwoofer, Any thoughts?

Hi,

I am new to the message board, but I am in the market for a new subwoofer so I figured I might give the forum a shot to get some insight. I had my eye on a Velvodyne Micro-Vee, but I am not sure if that is the route to go because it is so small (but tons of power). I am looking to spend about $500, any thoughts?

Try to avoid brick and mortar subwoofers like velodyne if cost is an object.

Look into offerings by HSU, Emotiva, Danley, JTR, Epik, Rythmik, SVS, Funkywaves, and also consider building your own. You will get much better performance for what you pay.

On that note you have to consider your goals (output, extension, and sound quality), space constraints, and room into the decision.

The Emotiva Ultra 12 is getting a lot of attention in that price range. There's a review up about it and it certainly looks to be a good choice. Haven't heard one myself and it lacks the connections I needed which is one reason I got the SVS SB12-NSD (which is around $600).

I've mentioned that since you looked at the Micro-Vee but depending on your needs and desires (in terms of size/appearance) and how you plan to use it, these subs might not be ideal. A ported sub in the same price range will likely play lower while pumping out a fair bit more volume so it'd be better for a larger room or if you intend to really push the sub.

Without knowing how much of a room you have there is no good suggestion other than measure the room. Include any spaces open to the room and make a sketch. Then contact Hsu Research and Elemental Designs and have them suggest a few options.

I'd say the Epik Legend at that price point, when it gets back in stock. The Emotiva Ultra12 would also definitely be something to look at.

The Micro-Vee is only a reasonable choice if small size is a priority.
Performance is being compromised to accommodate the small dimensions. It needs such a powerful amp in order to partially overcome the design compromises made keeping it so small!
For what it is, the Micro-Vee is a good design, but if you can afford more space for your sub you can get better performance with less money and less power.
The 12" Emotiva is one of many examples of a bit more size affording better all around performance at reduced cost.

I listen to a LOT of music and this sub does an excellent job with music. It is clean sounding and it hits plenty hard.
