Wondering how this would work or if its a general no-no? I recently saw pics on line of a DIY setup consisting of 4 subs in a large band pass box. Some day when its in the budget I think I would like to try this. How do you guys think 4 JL Audio 13W7 subs would sound in a HT setup? I have no doubt they would be loud but would they play low enough for HT usage?

most car subs roll off way too high to be of any use in a HT environment.

13W7s on the other hand... don't. They're very good nice drivers for HT but they're rather costly. I definitely think offerings by TC Sounds, Creative Sound Solutions, and Exodus will give you comparable performance with a better bang for buck.

Now regarding a box, I'd steer away from band pass for HT. While it may give you efficiency, you normally lose out on bass near 80hz or so and that forces you to use a lower crossover. Then you're asking more out of your mains. I'm not saying it's an awful idea, as tapped horns are sort of band pass boxes and i'd love to build one, I think you need to plan everything carefully with clear goals, meticulous modeling and enough understanding.

They are already used in home theater actually in the Fathom and Gotham Series.

However as stated TC Sounds and Exodus Audio all offer cheaper drivers usually at a better price point with on par performance.

TC Sounds is more or less the only company that offers a driver in a similar size that offers similar performance.

Very few drivers have the ultra low power compression of the W7 series drivers. The motor is extremely linear and they are conservatively rated in terms of xmax and power handling. This means highly accurate bass with ultra low distortion.

The 13W7 will offer over 32mm (one way) 64mm peak to peak of LINEAR excursion (rated). They can exceed this (verified by 3rd parties) up to 36-38 mm one way while remaining linear.

The 13W7 is an excellent sub woofer and is would be a stellar performer in the home or in the car.

I would be more than happy to help you design an optimal enclosure for this driver should you choose to go that route.
