Good news-bad news Dayton 120 blew

So I plugged in my Dayton sub-120 the other day (was out of town) and it popped in a bad way. Now when it plays it sounds horrible.
So if it's the driver, is it worth replacing, upgrading, or use as an excuse to buy something new ;)

If more power is needed I could replace the amp as well, but not sure if the box would hold up to a much better upgrade.

Thanks,
ChunkyDark

How old is it? They may warranty it. If not, you can replace the driver with another from them - they have direct replacements or if you want to mod it, I am sure they have people who have done that as well.

Bought it here ~2 years ago, but didn't realize you had to register to get extended warrenty so it's no longer covered.

Good suggestion, I'll give P/E a call after work. Perhaps they have the 'easy button' upgrade option of just dropping in a better driver. It's a very popular sub so I would think this comes up fairly often.

When you push on the speaker do you hear a scratching sound or feel something rubbing? If so you blew it up......:( I would also be worried about the amp if it blew the speaker just by turning it on unless you had it cranked up when you did.

"Hello,
I pulled one of these from stock and measured it. the sub in the link below should be very close but a little bit better quality overall. You should not need to upgrade the amplifier though.

Thank you so much for your business. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance. "

Very quick turnaround time, helpful, and courteous. Wish all my customer service interactions went this well.

So looking at 79$ to fix a 155$ sub that was ok, but not great to begin with. Since I was looking at upgrading before this happened thinking more about just upgrading to a "real" sub ;)
Well next month, fun money is going to new tires this month :(

Dark, IMO I would put the money in a new sub, it's costing half of what you originally invested in the old sub, and especially as you say it was just OK. I would suggest Lava, Emotiva, Cadence and of course Epik, you may get some negative responces from my suggestions, I pulled the trigger on a Epik Legend, to me this is my first real sub as you have stated, and it has performed beyond my expectations, but then again I never really had "A REAL SUB. Hope this helps.
cheers, Jeff

If Clint ever gets around to approving that Emotiva review by Gene, I'm sure it is going to say good things. Unless you have a big room, I'd be seriously looking at the Emotiva subs.

I have a Sub-120 driver lying around that I'd be willing to sell you if you are interested. Nothing at all wrong with it, I just upgraded the driver to a JL Audio 12W0V2.

Thanks, but I just ordered the Emo ultra 12. With all the mad love going on this site for it how could I resist ;)

Does this mean I have to buy skinny jeans now?

I posted that before I saw that you had already bought the new sub... but if you want it later on so you can fix your dayton, just so you have an extra working sub, let me know.

Don't think you need any nut hugger jeans though.
