Panasonic BD-55 won't play AVATAR bluray

So, I have a house full of people to watch AVATAR on bluray, (I have a Panasonic BD55) and the &#!@ disk doesn't work. It just loads a blank screen, then says "if you are having issues viewing the movie, please make sure your firmware is updated" seriously? has anyone else had this issue? I've read that some FOX movies have been problematic, so much so that they have a link on foxconnect.com that says basically "get firmware updated"- but I have the latest firmware, and it still won't work. suggestions? I sent Panasonic an email as well, I suspect I'll get the "contact the bluray disc vendor" response. I've not had an issue before, but I hate to admit that it's been a long long while since I've watched a movie. Probably over a year...

I love this forum BTW.

Can you try something for me?

Plug the player directly to TV, without going to receiver first. Just curious.

There is always the chance of a bad disc. I've never had a Pana player issue, and I've had two over the years (gave my old one away as a gift, and it still works to this day). The latest bad disc issue that I remember was a doozie, it was Inglourious Basterds, and jliedeka also had a bad disc (both were from Amazon). It sucked because I had a full house, every seat filled, with the evening planned well in advance.

I just reread your post, as well as my response. Hm, I don't think my idea is very worthy of a troubleshooter . . . but it's still something I might try . . .

I just tried that, but no joy :(
This blows...

Thanks for the suggestion though!

The worst part is that I received the Bluray as a gift...last year. Last night was the first time I tried to play it.

You're welcome, and I am so sorry.

Of course, with all of the FUD over bluray incompatibility, handshake/HDCP, etc, when Basterds failed, of course I started worrying immediately about my equipment (and didn't suspect the true culprit). When Harold/Kumar at gbay had all of this loud popping, I feared my amp was going or something (defective production of discs, without recall last I checked; must not select DTSMA).

It wasn't till I gave Basterds to my brother to test on his system that we knew for sure it was the disc.

So, my next suggestion is to try it on another bluray player. If it doesn't work, at least you know you won't want to throw your Pana player out the window anymore.

Seriously, I have no life.
Last time this happened to me, my eldest son and software writer downloaded an HD copy from Bit Torrent.

If the studios keep this up they will turn us all into pirates.

DRM should be banned. It seems to only stop legitimate users enjoying what they paid for. I got an education that you can get good quality pirated stuff fairly easily. So from what I'm seeing, DRM far from stopping piracy is actually forcing it! You see the pirates now know how to strip the codes, as the keys to the castle are now found and copied. I'm pretty much at the point of saying serve them right.

The pirated version worked just fine by the way.

I just ripped it to my media PC and played it back, worked just fine. But I agree that the DRM is doing nothing to prevent piracy, it only makes it harder for those who have a legit copy to enjoy it.

I have the same player, not sure now which update is on it but I am about 99.8% sure mine worked with Avatar when I first got it a while back.

Bummer.:(

I had an issue with Inception about 4 minutes into it, to about 10 minutes but then it was just fine after that. After the end, I recycled the player and didn't have that issue. Bummer ++

I have a lot of blurays, we ended up watching Terminator instead... I should have made sure the thing worked before everyone got there, but I'd never had an issue before- lesson learned.

I just purchased a Sony laptop with bluray player, so I'll try AVATAR in it when I get it and see if it works...

I watched the extended/collectors edition of Avatar Blu-ray last night on a stock firmware Panasonic BD55. It played the disk without any issues.

so, I tried to load the bluray like, 10 more times. because if at first you don't succeed...

The disk played just fine on my sony laptop, so I thought maybe I'd get lucky.

It worked! I dunno why. I'm just glad it did!

yay 2011! Happy New Year everyone!
