This one got good reviews and I had not heard of it, so I picked it up from Redbox last night. Very interesting and somewhat disturbing movie. Very good acting, especially the main character. No A list stars here, and that works to the movie's favor I think as it comes across very simply and honestly. It is about a young girl who's dad disappears and she is left to take care of her younger siblings and her sick mom. As she searches for dad, she uncovers a lot of bad stuff... PQ and AQ are good, and there are some interesting extras as well. Overall a solid movie and definitely worth a rent.

I think it was a great movie. Acting was awesome and also a good realistic plot. It could happen like that.

I heard about this one but have stayed away from it because I was told it is BLEAK. Like, you'll want to slit your wrists after watching bleak.

That would be something more like Requiem for a Dream. This one is not like that at all. The girl has to go through a lot of hard stuff that just keeps getting worse worse but the story is primarily about her being strong enough to tough it out. That is what makes it good.

Great, I borrowed Requiem from a friend who recommended it but have yet to watch it. Maybe I'll just give it back.

I like it and Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors, but it is definitely a heavy, depressing flick. The reviews made this one out to be more harsh than it was.

This flick is rather a down, but it's one of the best downers I have seen in a while. The acting is excellent, the scenery stark, the story believable and the production minimal be effective. You can cut the tension with a knife. When it's done, you won't want to be an Ozarker.

The believability in this film was amazing. That's what makes it so tense.

I wanted to slit the wrists of the characters in the movie ... as a kindness (even the pets). Maybe I'm just being hard to please but this sucked. Most times I'm down with the j_garcia and skizzerflake takes on films but other times I wonder if they're snacking on shrooms instead of popcorn. :p

It's not exactly a fun movie, but if you wanted to go on a slitting rampage, it must have been effective on some level. If I had been high, I probably couldn't have taken it.

Hit a little too close to home? ;) Nobody said this one was uplifting. One has to go into this one knowing that it isn't going to be a pleasant experience.

You'll probably want to steer clear of everything Darren Aronofsky has directed then.

LOL !!! :D For me it might have improved the film.

I'm not sure how to respond to that but overall I would say that my experience is vastly different from that of the characters. You notice nobody ever smiled in that movie? I'm sure the book would have been much more compelling due to better character development and being able to understand their motives. The screenplay at least had the good grace to provide a plausible reason for the events that led to the resolution of the struggle with a tiny ray of sunshine at the end.

I'll do my best. I think liked The Fountain but couldn't stand The Wrestler because looking at that freak show Mickey Rourke is just painful.

That's an interesting point. The movie was very effective. I guess they could have used some fancier (probably more expensive and outside of the budget) cinematography but my dislike is not of the acting, story or editing. A friend of mine made a similar point about classical music being powerful as illustrated by my g/f's dislike.

Hey Darien, if somebody plugs this movie in ... run. :D

I don't think you needed more character development or back story. I thought it flowed pretty well and hinted at how the characters arrived at this point that we are watching. It played out well and I disagree that a bigger budget look or cinematography would have improved it - I think exactly the opposite. A bigger budget or even a different director would have handicapped this one.

The Fountain is pretty out there, but I liked it. That is one of his more tame films. The Wrestler wasn't his best work IMO, but I liked the honesty and simplicity there also. Pi was pretty weird and Requiem was off the deep end. Going to see Black Swan today :)

I just watched this title, and thought it was a good show. Thanks again for the recommendation. If I was very picky, I'd give it a 2.5 outta 4, and on most days, probably 3 out of 4 (using the same scale that my old cable service did from years ago).

I was particularly impressed with the lead actor. I don't know how old she is, but she does look veritably young, and I thought she did a formidable job in portraying a youngster that had to grow up way faster than anyone should.

on a bad note: I think it was the first Netflix BD that was damaged and/or defective in the middle of it. I think it was slightly after her uncle had a conversation with the three guys outside the gas station. I tried cleaning with a 3M microfiber meant for glass, still no go. Maybe I've had great luck previously because I usually rent the artsy fartsy stuff no one else watched, haha, ok and now I'm renting more than ever as well . . .

Next netflix arrival is Mother, then I think Julie/Julia, Crazyheart, In Bruges. I ordered Ninja Assassin on my friend's rec, as it was $15 at Amazon.

I just read where Fresh Aire film critic David Edelstein gave Winter's Bone his nod as the number 1 film of the year.

I'd say the girl's performance is worthy of an oscar, but maybe not the film as a whole.
