Don't think anyone has brought this up, the True Grit remake. At first hearing this I was a bit "Oh geez". But the previews are kind of growing on me I must say. Pretty good cast along with the Coen brothers, what do you think? Giddy up or Whoaaaa. :)

Oh, it's a remake? Darn, I was hoping/thinking it would be an original.

The only remake I know of by the Coen Bros is The Ladykillers, and while I never saw the original, it was one of my greater disappointments with their output, maybe the most disappointing.

I'll have to see it just to compare to the original. To me, replacing "the Duke" is like replacing Sean Connery in the Bond films.

One review I heard said that they actually liked this version better than the original. The guy said that John Wayne was a great movie star, but not a great actor.

I know what he means. There are people that are actors and become different characters in different movies and then there are movie stars, who are basically the same person in every movie they're in.

Other than Heath Ledger I cannot think of a movie star that really plays different characters. Nearly all play into their natural character.

I love Jeff Bridges and I think he can pull off the part very well.

Daniel Day Lewis anyone????

The funny thing is you also get actors that become so big that they become movie stars as they get older. Look at greats like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino and Jack Nicholson. Those guys were true actors when they were younger. But now they basically just play themselves in every movie they're in. They have become so big that they don't have to act anymore.

I read somewhere that was not a remake of the first film, but rather they went back to the book and wrote a new screenplay. It looks good from what I have seen so far.

...as far as True Grit gos. I'll wait to see it at home when it's available. I hope it is a new screenplay. That would be cool.

What was the caper movie with him and De Niro? The one where he was pretending to be retarded. Great movie.

I didn't like that one so much, but his acting was still great in that one. The Score.

I now say that about all movies! I am going to try my darndest to wait on Tron as well. The last 5+ movies I've been to, I always ask myself the same thing, why not wait for the BD, it's so much better at home, and that's even when I compare it to the very expensive digital theaters.

I liked that one, I thought it was decent. Trivia bit for lsiberian: directed by Frank Oz of Muppets fame.

Speaking of De Niro specifically, with the idea of playing different roles, I think of Mad Dog and Glory. From one of the IMDb pages:

"Robert De Niro was initially offered the role of gangster Frank Milo, but he insisted on playing the timid Wayne instead.

SPOILER: According to producer Steven A. Jones, the original filmed ending has Milo beating Mad Dog in their fight. But test audiences could not accept seeing Robert De Niro getting beaten up by Bill Murray. Universal insisted that the fight scene be reshot and the film was delayed for a year. De Niro and Murray had taken the roles specifically because they were different than the type of roles audiences expected of them. The test audiences also felt Glory was an unsympathetic character so further reshoots were done to portray her as a victim of Milo's control."
