Indecisive Bluray choice

I know there is a dedicated BR area, but thought I'd get a quicker response here. I currently have a Panny BD-85 on order with Panasonic Direct but it won't be here until mid January. I've been looking at the Onkyo SR-807 discontinued model available for 300 bucks and thinking maybe it's a better choice based upon my use. I just looks like it's a better build. I don't think I'll be using the wifi that much on the panny and if I do want that, I can always pick up a Roku box. My question is..Does the Onkyo out perform the Panny for audio? I would be using this a a CD player as well. I will also be connecting it with the 7.1 analog outs (actually 5.1 in my case). If the audio performance is a dead heat, I just let the Panny order stand.

I'd be very surprised if there would be a sound diference between the two using the digital outputs.

With the analog outputs, it is theoretically possible for there to be an audible difference. But most likely, there won't be any significant difference, unless there are significant differences in settings (e.g., subwoofer crossover frequencies, etc.).

I have not read anything bad about the analog outputs of a Panasonic BD player, but it isn't the sort of thing I look for, as I only use HDMI with a BD player.

You should look for professional reviews, in which actual measurements are made, if you are worried about analog output sound quality. But unless you find some hard data to indicate that there is something wrong with the Panasonic, I would stick with it. Panasonic has been producing fairly highly regarded BD players for little money. I like mine. But, again, I only use the HDMI output, and have never even hooked up any of its analog outputs.

Dunno what you're paying for that BD-85 from Panasonic Direct but 6th Ave has 'em for $175, and they are in stock.

As for CD playback, it will only be two channels no matter how many channels you're using. This ain't a universal player that plays SACD.

I'm one of the many folks that ordered it from Panasonic Direct for 137.50. This was a mistake by them but they're honoring the price although they sold out and will not be restocked until mid January. I got my order in and they say that they will ship it when restocked. I'm not very confident in what they say since I was initially told it would ship before Xmas. According to other forums, I lot of guys are canceling their orders and ordering it elsewhere. I think thats what they want you to do, so I may just hold them to it, although I teetering...:)

As I've already mentioned to you before, I've never once heard of them not honoring a price, and your situation is extremely far from rare as far as wait times are concerned.

If the option is there, most definitely stick with HDMI.

While I'm not going to talk about Pana analog performance, you will have much more bass mgmt and post processing choices at hand if you use HDMI. All I will say is that I don't doubt that a $1000 Oppo 93 SE wouldn't sound better with analogs. If OTOH you want to compare to price point equivalents, I'd still stick with Pana for different reasons entirely.

Onkyo/Integra is generally regarded to be very good with digital inputs, but with analog inputs there are more opinions. Many of the early adopters of HDMI enabled pre/pros several years ago (as in 885/9.8) did buy 2ch prepros with HT bypass for analog stereo sources. However, even some of the very pickiest thought that the digital inputs sounded perfectly fine.

I have to use the 7.1 analog for audio. My receiver, which I use as a pre/pro is a Yamaha RX-V659 and does not support HDMI.
