Used Rotel amp vs. Emotiva UPA-2

Hi,

I plan to add an amp to my home theater receiver(pioneer vsx816), primarily because the output stage of the receiver is not working properly, and I will use the pre amp out to connect to an power amp. My main interest is music and don't really care much about movie. Set my eye initially on Emotiva UPA-2 but then got an offer from a friend for a used Rotel RB985 MkII for a very good price( half of what I have to pay for UPA-2). This is a 5 channel amp but I will only use 2 channels. Wonder which one suits me better?

One concern I have for Rotel is life span as it is fairly old. Wonder how long these amps last?

Thanks

I have a 30 year old Crown that still can rock the house...

Rotel makes a good product and that series is ~ the 10 year mark. So no worries there IMO.

If your friend is selling that Rotel for $170? RUN, not walk. I would purchase that so fast it would make your head spin.

Definitely, go for the Rotel. Emotiva makes good gear, but if you are driving that Rotel in 2 channel mode it will hardly get warm and should last quite a long while.

The only thing I have owned was the Pre-Pro (1066) from Rotel, I don't know about their amps, but the Pre-Pro was nothing special. IMO don't expect miracles with Rotel.

Hey, it's 10 years old. If something does go wrong, it's just an excuse to upgrade :D

AcuDefTechGuy: thanks for confirmation.

walter duque: I'm not expecting a huge improvement as the rest of my system is not really ideal for music, but I may be pleasantly surprised.

GranteedEV : Right on. The upgrade may extend to speakers and source, etc.
