Onkyo 807 refurb or new 708?

I'm looking to upgrade my receiver, and I can get a refurbished 807 for about the same price as a new 708. Which one would yall go with?

will 3D TV (HDMI 1.4a) "ever" be considered in the future ? And, while the refurb purchased from a factory authorized reseller should work very well, the newer NR708 would still be my choice.

Being unfamiliar with what either offers, I'm using a refurbed Onkyo 805 as processor for a bit less than 3 years now, and it works great. It feeds a NAD amplifier that I also bought as refurbed, and that I've had for a bit less than 4 years.

It was either a new 705 or refurbed 805 for me, and I thought why not get the beefy amp for the same price, even if I won't use it. I suppose I had resale value, or usability in mind.

Word of warning, mine didn't come with the Audyssey mic, and that killed close to $20 of the savings. OTOH, that was pretty affordable, because I've heard other manufacturers charge significantly more, like Denon for instance. Still, I feel they should have made that clear on their website . . .

I would go with the 708 simply because it has more power. I have never had a problem buying refurb equipment so if you like the features of the 807 better than those of the 708 I would not hesitate.

I would expect the 807 to have more power than the 708, but a refurb 700 series is normally the best value in Onkyo receivers. It leaves some cash for other things. The 805 is a gem. Even today it maintains it's value. They are built like tanks and loaded with features.

One more thing, something I didn't think of earlier. At least with my generation of 7xx vs 8xx, one thing I got (so far as I know) is dual power supplies, one each for audio and video. I believe the 7xx didn't have that, sharing the same power supply for everything. I am led to believe that if this is still true today (you'll have to research), that in itself might tip the scale, because I think your HDMI board will be better off for it. Once your HDMI board goes, your receiver is pretty much bricked.

With the ultra competitive prices of receivers today, the extra money often does go somewhere.
