I spent Turkeyday at grandma's. She has a new 42" HDTV hooked up to std 4:3 in stretch mode as well. It was funny as h.ll to see the football stats on the bottom going right to left. W h a t h . llamI looki n g a t h e r e ?

A guy I know bought his first home theater set back in the early 90's, it was a Kenwood receiver with a bunch of Cambridge soundworks cube speakers. It sounded OK for what it was, and it didn't cost much. Vastly superior to the TV speakers anyway. However, the mode he preferred to watch movies on it was some kind of Dolby PLx "concert hall" DSP reverb, with lots of echoes on everything. I told him it sounded ridiculous, but he seemed to enjoy it. Oh well, I can't complain too much, years later he gave me that Kenwood receiver, and it still works fine to this day.

Yeah ... the rec'r is going to be a bit of a challenge. At least he's not married to your sister. Just think ... he probably passes himself off as an 'electronics guy'. Tom Andry would have kicked his @ss. :D

It's only complicated to hook up because of those stupid vcr's. Everything else is HDMI. How much simpler does it need to be?

That aside, it always amuses me when somebody leaves a negative review of a big expensive flat panel tv because the speakers are wimpy. I just don't understand spending $3k on the tv and not even a couple of hundred on the sound.

Of course my extended family and friends don't have expensive tv's OR audio systems. I can't think of a single one with an audio component you can't buy at Walmart. They don't even know enough about this hobby to think the prices are crazy. Many of my relatives still don't understand what it is I'm doing for a living, and the few who have figured out what home audio means immediately asked me if I had anything as good as Bose.

I was asked by a relative what I wanted to do for a living. I said I wasn't sure, but I wanted to do something with audio, speakers, etc. So he responded with "Like Bose?" and I was like "No, better." :D
