Subwoofer only works on Universal with DVD-A and SACDs

Hey folks,

I have a Yamaha DVD 1700 Universal player (about 3 or 4 years old) and I'm PRETTY SURE I have it hooked up correctly to my Denon 3805 receiver. The problem is that it only plays through my Velodyne Subwoofer DLS-4000 when I'm playing SACD's and DVD-A's but not on regular DVD's or CD's. Should it or is it behaving as it should...only playing out of the sub when there is dedicated channel source (.1) on the software? I thought it would cutoff the lower frequencies as set on my 3805 (currently set at 100HZ) and play those out of the subwoofer. Actually the DVDs DO have a .1 channel so I have NO IDEA why they won't reproduce on the sub. I have the 3805 output low frequencies set for "LFE + Main". I've toggled most of these settings around multiple times trying to find subwoofer joy but with no luck. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

That setting sends the LFE track to the sub and to the front speakers. If there is no LFE track, the 'regular' bass will go to the front mains. In order to choose that setting you have the front speakers set to 'Large'.

You need to set all speakers to 'Small' and the sub to whatever setting means 'on'. LFE will still go to the sub but so will all the other bass.

MDS,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try this. Right now I have the mains and center set to "large" and the surrounds set to "small". So I guess whenever I want to transition between using and not using the sub (like late at night when the kiddies are sleep) I will need to swap that setting so I can still get lower frequencies from the mains and center.

Thanks again...I'll let you know if it works.

MDS...You da' man! That did the trick. I swapped the setting on the 3805 from large to small and it didn't make a difference, but when I swapped the settings on the Universal the sub came blasting though. Swapped the setting back to large on the 3805 and the sub stayed on so clearly that makes no difference for some reason. It's good to know I only need to swap it back on the Universal when I want to go 'subless' and have the lows return to the mains.

Thanks again! I'm sure that info is buried somewhere in my 100 page manual but I'm this was probably easier and quicker. Besides...I doubt I even KNOW where my manual is at!

You can simply use digital for movies and analog for SACD/DVD-A. That way the player handles the decoding for SACD and DVD-A and the receiver will handle it for everything else. I found that to work well with my 2200 and 2900. The settings in the player don't make any difference via digital connection and you can't use the digital connection for SACD and DVD-A.
