I am researching my next set of speakers.. i plan to get floor standers because of my large room (around 30x30)

my budget is $2000+/- for 5 speakers. i also plan on adding a SVS PB12 but that is not part of the budget, it will be added later.

my listening is about 50/50 music/movies and maybe sacd and vinyl sprinkled in here and there...

they will be driven by my Onkyo 876. I plan to mess with the bridging mode giving me 210W each for the front L/R.

at first i was leaning towards NHT Absolute based on an audition of the older NHT Zero tower I heard years ago.

then I read a lot of good things about PSB image T5 and T6... (both NHT and PSB have a high WAF too :) )

now the latest wrench in the sprocket is while black friday shopping, i noticed Best Buy now carries B&W, i quickly googled the 684 and it gets great reviews also... and BB usually offers great same as cash deals too (bonus)

also Klipsch, Energy, Boston Acoustics also make towers in that price range too...

I know its going to come down to what I think sounds good, but being that this will be my first entry into higher end gear i want to do it right the first time and weed out the contenders that probably arnt as "good" as the others and I defiantly dont have the time to devote to auditioning all sub $1000 towers.

I know everyone has been in the position I am currently in, well maybe there are a few that jumped right into some Thiels... :)

*Wrap up*
I am kind of set on the PSB T5, if the extra $$$ is justifiable i will step up to the T6, but i certainly want to hear he NHT also..

but I am curious about the B&W now and maybe others too...

Lots of solid choices for you, but don't over think it. The Image T5 is an excellent speaker for what you are describing your goals to be. Rather than upgrade to the T6 you would be better served spending that money (& perhaps a bit more) on a 2nd subwoofer, particularly considering the room you described. This will allow you a much better bass experience than just the single model. For multi channel listening there will be little to no gain in sound quality between the T5 & 6 in your room. There will be a definite & immediate benefit to the 2nd sub.

Good luck to you!

I can tell you a bit about the b & w's you were looking at at best buy. I've been auditioning them vs the paradigm monitor 9's for a while now. The bw have a dual port which gives them pretty robust bass response, how ever they take a little away from the sensitivity to create a bit more low end. The tweeters are amazing, vocals were much more clear then the paradigms.

The create one heck of an image too, as if there is a center channel. I am going with the Paradigms myself.

bw made in china
paradigm STILL made in canada

I was never a fan of Paradigm's Monitor series. They are the weak link in their chain. The Studio's series I'm impressed with. If one is looking at the Monitor series price range, I suggest going over to PSB's Image series instead. Just a better perfroming line IMO.
