Hello I have a Sharp 32" LCD tv with 2 hdmi inputs. I recently bought a new Onyko TX-SR508 reciever. Now i have two speakers in the ceiling that i want to listen from. So i want sound from my ceiling speakers & TV speakers.

So far this is what i did:

I can listen to ceiling speakers with Ipod, Radio, PS3 - so they are connected correctly.

I have one HDMI going from my Reciever OUTPUT to one of my TV'S HDMI ports.

So is it possible to listen/watch my tv with my ceiling speakers or do i need to do something with reciever settings or purchase some composite wires, digital optical wires, etc..

ALSO what is HDMI control, RIHD, & Audio Return Channel

What audio outputs does your TV have? These days they are all different.

This may be a difficult problem as most receivers will send HDMi audio to the TV or audio to the receiver but not both.

When watching TV, are you using the TV's internal tuner? You would be if you have cable connected directly to the TV or are using an external antenna (for 'over-the-air' HD). If that is the case, you would need a digital optical cable from the TV's optical out to an input on the receiver.

I forget the name of the setting, something like HDMI audio out or TV audio out, in the Onkyo settings menu. It needs to be off, so that the receiver doesn't send the audio to TV.

HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is a control scheme whereby devices connected via HDMI can control each other. You could use eg. the TV's remote control to control a DVD player if both are connected via HDMI and both support HDMI CEC. It allows 'convenience' type features like if you turn on the dvd player, the receiver will automatically turn on and select the dvd input. It can be useful for simple setups but most people just use a universal remote to do the same things.

RIHD is Onkyo's implementation of HDMI-CEC. It stands for Remote Interactive over HDMI. Onkyo has long had RI which does most of the things HDMI-CEC now does but only worked between Onkyo components and the downside is you have to have analog connections. HDMI-CEC is the industry's attempt to standardize these control schemes so different devices from different manufacturers can work together.

The Audio Return Channel allows the TV to send its internal audio, like when using its internal turner, back to the receiver over the same HDMI cable that you connected to the receiver's output. Both TV and receiver must support it and if yours do, then you wouldn't need the additional optical cable.

I have a SHARP AQUOS LC32D43U and

2 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A),
1 x RGB input (15 pin HD D-Sub (HD-15)),
2 x HD component input (RCA phono x 3),
1 x S-Video input (4 pin mini-DIN),
2 x Composite video/audio input (RCA phono x 3),
1 x Digital audio output (optical) (TOSLINK)

AND i have Comcast cable with a Digital transport adapter.

EDIT - I tried to enable HDMI CONTROL, ARC, and hdmi audio output on/off/auto and no sound from reciever speakers, just tv speakers :-((

I tested ps3 and that played thru both set of speakers though.

Sorry I'm late getting back to you, but we have had a lot of family activities this weekend.

I think what you want is to be able to play your TV and ceiling speakers at the same time. In your case if you want to use HDMI this is not possible.

Your TV is not an RIHD compatible device, which allows for more complete integration. Also your TV does not provide an audio return from HDMI that your receiver can recognize.

So if you set your receiver HDMI audio output to on then you will hear audio from your TV but not your ceiling speakers connected to your receiver. If you set the HDMI audio to off you will hear audio from your ceiling speakers but not the TV.

Unfortunately your receiver does not convert digital audio to analog available at any of the receiver analog outputs.

So it seems to me your only solution, and it is not a good one, is to connect all your devices to your receiver using analog connections and use analog connections to your TV.

Really ceiling speakers are a very poor choice for AV. They are really for background music.

I recommend getting a decent speaker set and using those and forgetting about ceiling and TV speakers. This is really the way your receiver was designed to work anyway.

No it won't. You will have to go analog through out and not use HDMI.

So you need to connect all your peripherals to your receiver with Component video cables and analog audio cables. You will need component video cables from receiver to TV and analog audio cables from receiver to TV.

The whole thing will be a nightmare.

I strongly recommend you ditch the ceiling speakers and go with at least two decent speakers for the front. Best would be to build a 5.1 or 7.1 system, including a sub.

It really will not be satisfactory to have the TV speakers and the ceiling speakers playing at the same time. In my view that is a waste of cables and effort, as you will need a lot of expensive cables to do what you want and its not worth it.

If you don't want to go to the expense, decide whether you want to watch TV with the TV speakers or ceiling speakers but not both.

As far as the old Kenwood is concerned, I don't have time to go digging up old manuals. So please research this yourself. We are not a free customer service although we are often used and abused as such.

If you have specific questions, frame them intelligently and post them here and we will do our best to respond.

From what it sounds like he should be able to leave you hdmi connection as is and connect the digital out from your cable box to the digital in on the receiver. Then disable the internal tv speakers or turn the volume to zero. Then on the receiver assign the digital input that is coming from the tv to the current source that you are using for your tv on the receiver. Also you want to go into the settings for the cable box and make sure digital out is enabled.

The problem is he wants to play TV speakers and the ceiling speakers from multiple sources not just the cable box as I understand his request.

Oh well in that case that's a terrible idea and will never work. The audio delay between the two will make it unwatchable.

This ceiling speakers & reciever are in my bedroom. I dont want a full speaker system with a sub. I just want to be able to listen to music from the speakers above. And when i watch TV i want the option to be able to listen from the ceiling speakers OR/AND the Tv speaker.

My ceiling speakers are actually Polk Audio OWM3
polkaudio . com/homeaudio/owm3/

I was just trying to see if I can listen to the tv from the ceiling speakers at all. Doesnt have to be from the TV & Ceiling. I just wanted to see if they work with the TV. But i cant figure it out. I dont want to keep buying wires if they dont work for what im trying to do. BUT I do appreciate the help you are giving me. This is my first system and im trying to figure out all the features.

I have the old manual for the old reciever, It doesnt have anything with hooking up a TV to the reicever. Just a "monitor" which im guessing is the tv.

I wish i understood this stuff but i dont and im just asking for help.

Well that is now an easy problem. Use HDMI. When you enable HDMI audio on for your receiver you will hear audio from your TV. When you set the HDMI output on your receiver to off, you will hear the ceiling speakers.

You can not hear both at the same time, and you would not want to.

To switch from one to the other you will have to go into your receiver menu.

Is your old Kenwood an AV receiver or an old audio receiver. I can't help you unless you provide more details. We can't remember every product ever made!

Post pictures of the front and back of the Kenwood if you have further questions.

I can't find a user manual for your Kenwood. However I did find a manual for the KR V6040. This series of receiver is unlikely to be any use to you. It only supports composite video connection, which is very low quality and not suitable for modern TVs. All of that 600 series are similar. Also it is an old prologic with no modern digital codecs. It is entirely analog. I did find a user guide for your unit in German.

Your model number for the Samsung is not a valid number according to their site.

However I have seen enough to know that Kenood receiver is now of no use to man nor beast, and needs a decent burial at the recycling center.
