Would this be a decent subwoofer to use for a ht custom build? Anything out there I should choose over it for the price? And how big of box would it have to be ? Thanks!

Just be aware, you're going to spend a decent amount on a good amp to do this driver justice.

Warp may chime in here, but thats a SICK speaker and like Matt said you need a boatload of power to make it run at its optimum levels.I know Warp has built a few TC based subs and they are killer from the reviews.......

They are likely the best low frequency low distortion driver avialable.

The TC sounds LMSR15 would be a more economical choice, but you would need a little more box volume. Two of them have a little more displacment that one 5400 but cost less. In theory they should sound as good, same design just smaller. I have used both and I think they have equal sound quality.

The 5400 works well in 2.75-4.5 cu feet sealed, 6-9 cu feet passive radiator.
You need ~2kw to realy get them going.

ya i have about 2k-4k to play around with, i keep running winISD programs and both the LMS-R 12(4 of them) and 15"(2of them) versions seem to best it by just a bit.

I assume these speakers would be nearly impossible to port properly? i only have about 8 cu ft total to work with

The only way to port in that small of space is with passive radiators. The LMSR15's work in 4cu feet for one, tuned to ~20hz you gain ~4db ~30hz to ~20hz, over sealed, but have nothing below that.

If you want the most output and extention, to 10hz, for your 8 cu feet I would go with a pair of 5400's or Pro18's sealed. And lots of power.

Not sure how much I can add over what Nathan from Funky Waves already said, he knows his stuff and gets more time with the different variety of drivers from TC, but the LMS's are beasts and worth the money IMO...

If you can find them, the Crest 8002 amp (4000w @ 4ohms) used is an awesome power plant for that driver, I have 6 of them powering my setup.

Like the others said, GREAT driver! Can't go wrong with it. I have an amp for sale that'll give it all it can handle and then some! PM me if interested. :)

That QSC 9.0 amp you have will easily power 2 of the 18" LMS's, 1 driver per channel... No question about it....

Good luck in the sale...

You will need to use P-Rs to get the most out of the driver. At full power even a slot port can run out of air on one of these drivers.

If you have a true home theater I like 4 subs one in each corner. For that even the Dayton Reference drivers would get the job done.
