Magnepan MMG

I'm pretty excited just received my Magnepan MMG. I just hooked them and the sound is amazing . The soundstage is awesome I still have a lot of moving around to get the best placement . I an very impressed on how they sound and clear they are. I know alot of people have a problem with the bass but I am very pleased with it for the type of music i listen to. I have watched a couple movies clip and im very pleased with them. I will get some better thoughts about them after i get them postioned right and some tuning.

Very nice! The MMG's are still one of the great audio bargains out there. Whenever I get the space, I will definitely try a pair. I've heard other Maggies, and I love the sound, but they're big speakers. Size-wise the MMG's look easier to integrate into a room.

It's best to get a lot of power behind those guys. They're affordable speakers, but do cost a bit to get running to their potential. Have fun with 'em!

Those are a great sounding set of speakers and one of the gems of the audio world. Paired with a sub or two and you have a heck of a two channel system for not much money. Maggies are some of my all time favorite sounding speakers.

I've been thinking the same thing. Always wanted to hear some Maggies. I don't really need any more speakers either. I'll have to hold off though, since I just upgraded my DAC and preamp. Both should be here by the end of next week.

Keep us updaded camaro. I'm very interested in your impressions after you've had more time with the MMG's.

I have the 1.6s with the MMG C for my HT and absolutely love them (run them on an XPA 5). Music and voice have never sound more realistic IMO opinion, and great on movies so long as you have a decent sub (I have SVS PC Ultra).

I have been toying with getting the MMGs for my computer speakers. The main problem with the MMGs (for me) is the listening plane. Sitting down you are fine, but stand up outside the field of the speaker and there is a dramatic change. Maggies are very placement sensitive.

I did see on a post somewhere that a user placed the MMGs on top of dual subs (one maggie for one sub) and that to me was an neat/cool idea if the placement of the subs and maggies can work because not only did it add bass extention for the maggies but it also raised the MMGs up so that at a standing position, you were not outside its field of sound. Just something to think about if you were going to add subs.

I've been playing with my MMG's for about a week now & Magnepan is going to have to pry them from my cold & lifeless fingers. They have provided me with the most dramatic musical change i have introduced into any of my music systems since my purchase of Dayton Wright LCM-1's back in the 80's. You will hear the angles signing with 'em, but my older rock CD's show all the early digital, crispy high end problems. I haven't used the tweeter resisters supplied yet untill they're more broken in. Man! they will illuminate your source material to a fault!
If they sound this good now, then i don't know what to expect after i've done a couple of mods to them.

They also have a limited maximum output. This is not a problem with sane volumes in a normal sized room, but if one listens at deafening levels or has a huge room, the MMG is not ideal.

However, I do think that they are a great speaker for the money, and for my tastes, if I were buying a new speaker for about that price, and had the room for them and appropriate amplification for them, they are what I would buy.

For me, i think i may have the perfect (medium) sized living room to set up a MMG/MMG-W/MMG-C system. I'm waiting on a back-ordered MMG center channel to arrive, then comes the baby ones for the back surrounds. The transparency & imaging of the sound stage is incredabile already, so the addition of the center & backs should be pretty fantastic for a complete Maggie HT system @ $1,200. So far, my old Adire Rava 12" sub is doing it's duties, but i'm looking at the baby REL's real close...

What amp are you using to drive the MMGs?

I'm using an Onkyo SR608. Just got a pair of the MMG-W's today to use as rears (the MMG-C is comming) & was testing all the Maggies with the soundtrack from the movie Gladiator. The little 608 did just fine with all 4 running hot at about 78-80 on the volume control.
I should add here that i'm waiting on a new Denon 4311CI which should handle all 5 Maggies with ease...

Been reading a bit about these lately. Should I take a drive up the road to White Bear Lake and visit the factory or am I just compromising my wallet? Will I HAVE TO HAVE THEM, or will I walk away appreciated a different, but not necessarily better sounding speaker than my paradigms?

To my ear: a full-size set of Maggies will outperform a pair of Paradigm Monitor-series speakers when properly setup. Ribbons sound good, but are fussy.
