What electrical cable properties is the HDMI eye pattern test measuring

Can anyone tell me what the HDMI eye patter test is, exactly how the test is carried out and what cable electrical properties is it measuring.
I am completely confued about this.

So how is the eye pattern test built up, I still dont understand what i am looking at, is it just one fequency sampled over and over using a digital sotrage osciloscope from a high frequency generator at the other end of the cable.
