Need Speaker Advice

Ok so we just re-designed our "game room" it roughly 20ish by 12ish. I have a tv mounted in the corner unfortunatly because of a window where I really wanted it. Most of the time in this room it is used for music when we have gatherings and playing video games.

My question is I would like to know what brand speakers would best fit my needs. When we listen to music we like to have it turned up a bit ;) I would prefer to go with a floorstanding speaker vs bookshelf type for fronts because of space. I will be going with a component system (I'm pretty sure) because we have a PS3 that can take care of all other needs. Thanks for anyone that can give me some advice

Oh yeah I don't want to have to get another mortgage to pay for this system either LOL I would like to keep it under 2g for a decent 5.1

Budget I'm hoping for around 2 grand. I'll have to figure out power after I get an idea of what's going to be powered, I would just like to stay with standard receiver (any idea's there be great too). Yes I want a sub

Ok, Christmas coming around and guess the wife wants to get me a receiver. think it is going to be a Sony STR-DH810 Receiver or Marantz SR5005 for power.

Now comes speakers. Where this will be placed will be our gameroom. Lots of sports, video games, and lots of music. Still in debate as far as 7.1 or 5.1. 5.1 would be easier with room layout to install but oh well, I'll make either happen :D!

Now I need some help with speakers! I want to do floor standing front speakers and leaning toward Velodyne sub. Any one have some advice for me on a good set up for me. Really like Cerwin Vega cmx series, but been looking at Polk and Klipsch. Does it matter if I use same brand speakers all the way around? Wouldn't mind a "smaller" speaker for all the rear's

Thanks hoping someone can lead me in right direction!!!! Frustration is setting in

The choice between 5.1 and 7.1 kind of depends on how much space you have. I ususally recommend starting with 5.1. You save a little cash and can always add two extra speakers later on. Since your use is mainly music and games, I'd go 5.1.

Have you listened to any of the brands you listed? I would strongly recommend it if you haven't yet. The Klipsch horn tweeters really come down to personal preference. Some love them and some hate them. I've owned a few Klipsch offerings in the past and felt they were very good for home theater, but I didn't care to use them for music. I had an Infinity Primus setup for my HT and preferred them to the Klipsch and Polks in the same price range.

At the very least, you want your front three speakers from the same brand/line. The surrounds are less important to have matched.

Here's something to consider from SVS. http://www.svsound.com/products-spks-sts01.cfm

You could add the SB12-NSD sub to the package and be right around your $2k budget. Their subs are excellent, so I have a hard time believing their speakers would be a bad choice.

Just trying to give you options you might not have considered.

Opperman thanks for some more advice, NEEDED IT! Problem with where I live, quality stereo shops are few and far between! Think there is only one still in my area. Therefore it is hard for me to listen to the upper line of speakers, Tin can and string is still used in some places :). If Best Buy has them I can listen to them, and there is also a stereo shop in same town, just wanted to have some idea's before I go into stereo shop cause you know them, here is the best of the best only 30g a piece! I owned some CV's back in the day that were a "large" bookshelf type speaker that were great and I know they still have a great reputation, kicking myself in the rear for getting rid of. Most of your box type stores around here if you want surround sound they push Bose because of the name. Not that I don't like bose, actually thought about it cause the cubes would give me way more room (our gameroom is decorated with lots of mirrors and tv's). I'll take a look at the SVS. Thanks for opening my eyes to another brand! Keep the idea's flowing!

No need to kick yourself for getting rid of the CVs. Foam surround would have rotted by now. Speakers have come a long way since then, and CV has went down hill. I have a pair of CV D7's from 1985. They used to be great, BITD. They suck today.
