Trying to upgrade/finish system

I am trying to finish (okay that's what I tell my wife) or upgrade my system (I think that's more truthful). Really just looking for the best bang for the buck upgrade. Whatever I do needs to be in the 1K to 1.5K dollar range. Not opposed to buying used (Rcvr, Front Spkrs and music server are all used)

We built a new room a few years ago, here are the specs: the room is 20X21 with an additional 8X11 nook area off to the side with a 12 ft. cathederal ceiling.

My equipment consists of the following:

Samsung 58 in. Plasma
Sony SAT Tivo
DirectTV HD 20 HDDVR
Escient E-120 (Fireball) Music Server (upgraded to 160 HD E2 firmware)
Oppo DV-981HD
Denon AVR-3805
Pro-Ject 2 Experiance TT w/ Sumiko Blue Point #2 cartridge
and a Pro-Ject Phono 2 Phono Amp
Speakers:
Front L&R- Onix Strata Mini's (AV123)
Center- Rocket RSC 200
Surr- Klipsch RS-35
B. Surr- Boston CR-6

This room and equipment is used for both 2 Channel and HT listening. I usually listen to LPs whenever I get the chance. The wife and kids use the Escient (Fireball) all the time. We all use this room for movies and watching tv. This is the only TV in the house connected to sat. (no cable). TVs in kids rooms are hooked up to game stations or vcr/dvd players. Open to all options/advice DAC's, new Rcvr etc.

Thanks Ron

no sub

Sorry the Strat Mini's each have a 350 watt sub.

Oh, I see... still built-in 8" sub (even two of 'em) is not equal to one good dedicated sub.
One of best choices for you (especially for music) would be Epik Empire or SVS (stick to sealed ones)

Dude, a pair of properly placed 15" subwoofers like dual epik empires would be a big upgrade over your towers. You can place them in more optimal spots for flatter in-room response, you'll get way more bass extension and volume, and more impressive transients.

On that note though, I don't agree that sealed subs are more "musical" than ported subs. At least not after I read this

Another thing you want to look into before you go and splurge on speakers and electronics IMO are room treatments!!

After that I'd say a blu ray player - PS3 or Oppo BDP-93 would be a nice thing to look into. Finally look into an HDMI 1.3 or 1.4 capable receiver - but only after a new sub and room treatments.

Given your budget, I would go with a BD player first. Panasonic offers good ones for very little money. If you don't want to replace the receiver, you will want to get one with internal decoding and multichannel analog outputs to be able to get the new audio formats. (And given your budget, if actual performance is what matters for your money, rather than convenience, I would recommend doing that instead of replacing your receiver, which is otherwise fine.) Then I would consider a subwoofer, or replace speakers (to improve them, or to simply get them to match each other more exactly, especially the front three should match).

And as for the subwoofer, I like SVS, and I don't think you need to worry about having ports in it. Buy based upon actual bass performance, not irrelevancies.
